looking for a router

Mon Nov 04, 2013 8:24 am

recommend one, good name brand on the cheaper side

i'm planning on switching to teksavvy.com cable (current rogers cable) for two computers next year, here's a list of modems http://teksavvy.com/en/residential/internet/cable/cable-25-2 click on approved modems, thinking motorola, i currently have the sb5100 since 96, never a problem but it's docsis 2, my current plan is 25Mbps with rogers, so i think i wouldn't need a new modem to be honest, i take it i'd need a second IP ? don't know what the charge is yet...

There's a very active TekSavvy forum on DSLReports http://www.dslreports.com/forum/teksavvy where someone should be able to suggest good modems and routers for the cable packages. I'm on the 25/10 VDSL package with TekSavvy and use a Linux box as a router.

You may be forced to get a new modem anyway. I'm with TekSavvy as well. Strange hearing of a Rogers customer that actually owned the modem

I'd recommend getting a docsys 3.0 so that you can go to higher speeds if you choose. Techsavvy is not overly profiting on the modems, but you do lose control of it as it arrives locked down.

The good news is TekSavvy does not have the tools to track usage so the 300GB may as well be unlimited. Moving up to the next tier is by honour system. Read up on dslreports.com if you want more about that.

You don't need a second IP unless you have a need to have 2 external facing computers (most users do not have this need and you lose you hardware firewall in the router)
The router would handle everything, the router faces the internet and distributes traffic to internal computers.

1 router can handle a lot of computers.
For cheap router you do get what you pay for but I have had good experience with Trend and Asus.
Belkin is good but I found it lacking in options to configure.

Of course you have the big names Linksys/Cisco and Dlink who have offerings accross all prices.

really it all depends on what features you want and what you plan to do.

Rogers cannot compete... I dropped $100 from my bills by dropping them. I was always over on usage. After leaving them Retentions called and gave me this "great offer" - after doing the math on overages I my bills would have dropped $5.
it took 2 months for switching to pay for itself... there was a $75 charge to switch and a $100 modem in that... shows how much the incumbents are fleecing their customers.

To warn you Rogers does treat TekSavvy and users as second class citizens and if there is an outage you do not come back up too fast.
you can read all about it at DSLReports.

I'm not the biggest fan of internal antennas. I present nothing to back up that sentiment. But that looks like a nice router.

They've been discussed in the TekSavvy DSLReports forum with people wanting TS to carry the VMedia TV streams. As it stands you need to be with VMedia to get their TV offerings. There's also ElectronicBox and Start who get mentioned a lot.
