7850 for $90 after MIR and Code

Sun Nov 03, 2013 3:11 am

NVEXCLS97 takes an additional $35 off and brings it down to $90. Definitely a great deal on these cards.

Can you believe these things launched at over $200? Crazy.

BTW, when does the code expire?

You can't combine the promo code with the rebate.

Yea, the price is $154 for me.

Also, anyone looking for good gaming-oriented card should avoid this and go for at least the 7950 with at least 3GB of video RAM.

It's not bugging out on the rebate, it is on the free game codes.

"The promo code NVEXCLS97 cannot be combined with combo deals or gift items attached to products."

Weird... That's probably why they didn't sell out right away, you simply can't use the code. Someone call Newegg...

Not sure why 2GB of memory is bad... You're setting the baseline pretty high for a $90 card.

In other news, the new filter on Neweggs site sucks. You can't even search by GPU model anymore, you have to use the search bar.

I think they're floating around $250 right now, but I got mine for around $200 with MIR.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

Of course you're not. Try playing BF4 at 1080p, on a 64-player server. Especially with "Supersampling" (it is labeled as "resolution scale") enabled. Watch video memory usage using tools like MSI Afterburner. And I am sure other game developers will follow the EA, especially since consoles now have a couple more gigs of RAM to spend on higher res textures and monitors with higher resolution are starting to get more popular... So once again, 3GB of video memory should be the minimum recommended (even if it is not required) for a gaming - oriented card.

Like I said, I'm not sure why 2GB of memory is bad on a $90 card. If you're trying to throw all the bells and whistles of BF4 at a $90 card and expecting it to run it perfectly, perhaps you should reassess what you're doing.

If you're aiming for console levels of GPU memory 3GB of memory is piss in the bucket. I wouldn't lust after 3GB anymore then I would after 2GB. New gen consoles have a lot more memory then current GPUs do unless you go extremely high end.

As far as performance goes, my 7870 runs BF4 on ultra just fine on big servers (which has 2GB of memory).

It's not bad for a $90 card. It is, however, bad for a gaming-oriented card for next - gen games. This is why even EA themselves recommend at least 3GB card and anyone else with a card with 3+ GB of memory can see the game using more than 2GB of video RAM, using simple software tools.

"Just fine" is, of course, a purely subjective quantity - someone might be satisfied with severe FPS drops and random "hitching" at maximum settings and someone prefer to have a more smooth experience. I prefer to also "have a more smooth experience" and I wish the same to other people, this is why I said they should save up a little and buy a better card from the start.

Just to point out the obvious, YOUR comments are also purely subjective. While a 7950 might be what's required to play BF4 Multiplayer at 1080p + Ultra settings, that's not what EVERYONE "needs." Someone can certainly play the same maps you're playing on a 7850 2GB @ 1080p if they turn the settings down to say...Medium-High and be perfectly satisfied.

Your recommendations aren't false, they're just out of context to a buyer with a ~$100 budget for a GPU. A 7950 costs $220+ which is 2.5x more than the 7850 that Bensam pointed out. The two cards aren't even in the same league. A 7850 is definetly an entry level card (and a good one at that), but that doesn't mean it's insufficient for people in this budget range.

One of my viewers told me if you contacted Newegg they would honor the deal.

Games scale back as well as forward. Meaning you can run games at a lower setting. I wouldn't say anyone needs 3GB of memory anymore then someone needs a 290x or a 780ti. Of course this card is going to have problems running everything on ultra four years down the line when consoles have 8GB of shared memory and video cards have 8 and 16 gigs of VRAM, but by then you'll be looking to replace this $90 deal.
