Work conferences are great but I'm always glad to get back home. so very glad. My own bed, my own cooking, my pets. A chance to do laundry.

Also, in this case, it means I'm not driving in Dallas anymore. Holy god that was terrifying at times.

edit: got the news that a friend of my wife's died while we wer eout of town :( I wasn't particularly close to her but she helped co-host my wife's baby shower and they'd gone to the same church and been friends for about 10 years. She was 70 so it isn't like she was super young but it was still a shock. She was fine last time we talked. Funeral tomorrow.

Woman I went to high school with is getting a divorce, and regaling everyone on her Facebook list with the sordid details. I'm about ready to block her until the divorce is final. She seems like she's still the solid citizen she was in 1990, and her husband seems like a real douche, but I don't really need a blow by blow of her nasty divorce

That's a bummer. I had to block a coworker for a while, while she went through a messy divorce. I already got a blow-by-blow in person every morning against my wishes, and then I saw it again later that day or as it happened. I get it. It's awful. But do you need to tell everyone?

::shudder::

I haven't run into that kind of nonsense, although I don't think my high school friends have hit the age that they would have nasty divorces yet...just lots of babies, and pictures of babies, and 3D ultrasound pictures of babies in progress.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

This conference call makes me sympathetic to developers. 20 minutes and counting of people bitching about the font choice (italicized) to differentiate two types of terms that we wanted to show in the same field.

I have hardly even looked at computer hardware for the last few years been spending all my spare time/ hobby funds on radio control toys. I have started shooting a lot of video of said activity and decided its time to upgrade. My computer slows to a crawl when I render video. I still have a Radeon 4870 in my desktop and judging by TR's latest benchmarks its just a step above today's integrated graphics and far behind even a 150 dollar video card.

The big question though is ram. Is the formula for ram still N+2 ? N being the current amount of ram you have and the number being the additional amount of ram you need

Nowadays it's X, where X is what the mobo will support.

Most of the time, it starts out as n x S where "n" is the number of memory channels that your processor has (2 for most mainstream CPUs) and "S" is the size of the largest DIMM available for a reasonable $/GiB (8 for unbuffered DDR3).
$150 -22½ code "EMCWWXR26" 2x8 GiB PC3-14900 G.Skill F3-1866C9D-16GXM (DDR3-1866, CAS 9, 1.5 V)
$144 2x8 GiB PC3-12800 Crucial BLS2K8G3D1609ES2LX0 (low-profile, DDR3-1600, CAS 9, 1.35 V)
· R7-5800X, Liquid Freezer II 280, RoG Strix X570-E, 64GiB PC4-28800, Suprim Liquid RTX4090, 2TB SX8200Pro +4TB S860 +NAS, Define 7 Compact, Super Flower SF-1000F14TP, S3220DGF +32UD99, FC900R OE, DeathAdder2

Gotcha. Adobe Premier is a PIG. I need faster everything.

Hmmm 16 gigs of ram and a little higher end video card ( I rarely play games as still having a Radeon 4870 shows) or 32 gigs of ram and a cheaper video card.

Premier supports CUDA and OpenCL if you're on CS6 (or CUDA only if you're on 5.5 or older, from what I can tell), so you should probably do a little digging into how much you want to spend on your video card upgrade and get whichever is faster for your version of Premier. And get 32GB of RAM anyway.

Unless you're into messing around with VMs or doing photo editing on huge multi-layer high-res images, 16GB really should be enough. But if your mobo supports 32GB, it will make the system feel a lot smoother by allowing the OS to cache pretty much everything you're using at any given time, and completely eliminating the need for the OS to ever hit the pagefile.

These days I consider 8GB to be bare minimum for a new build, and 16GB to be "sweet spot" in terms of cost/performance.

If you just browse the web and don't do VM or content creation, then I would say 16 GB would be fine.

But there are always exceptions:

1. If you do audio composing with orchestral or other sample-based instruments, then 16 GB may be "minimum" and 32 GB may be "sweet spot". For very large orchestral scores, I suggest 64 GB as a minimum; especially if you are running all of your plugins on your local machine. High resolution sample-based instruments can be HUGE; just embarrassingly HUGE, and even bigger when you get a library that has a lot of articulations. The OS+DAW+violin sections 1 and 2 alone with just a handful of articulations might use up a good majority of your 16 GB. And really, what is a score if it doesn't include violas, cellos, stand-up basses (at least two!), woodwinds, a booming brass section, drums and percussion, and of course some electric guitars?

2. If you do any 3D graphic art or animation, be aware that at least one maker recently came out with a new "HD" mesh/morph character set. This is new and is just beginning to hit the market, and I think it will only grow in usage (just like 64 bit software, or the use of PCIe slots, or USB 2 and now 3). These HD meshes have a ridiculously high polygon count, but the detail can bring Hollywood quality to my home-grown cheerleader zombies. :o It's easy for a 64 bit computer and 64 bit OS to position this data in memory and keep track of the polys and textures, and all else needed to properly represent pigtails and decaying flesh. Well...if you have acres of RAM, that is. I suggest 64 GB as a minimum.

If you don't do any of this crazy stuff or need to feed or shelter zombies, then 8-16 GB would probably be just fine.

Problem is, once you get up beyond 32GB you're generally talking enterprise-class hardware and registered DIMMs. Things start to get expensive really fast.

Zero photo editing for me, I leave that to the wife, she is fairly serious about her photography. Probably the most intense thing I do is edit and render videos. I don't even play games that much anymore.
