16:10

I had wondered if 4K was going to kill that off ratio entirely.

Indeed. That's why it's 40K, I'm sure. If it was 16:9 it'd be like.. what. 3K? :D

The second picture makes the monitor seem about four inches thick! Must be a lot of hardware in addition to the panel packed into the display casing. It does have an ethernet port afterall.

What is the ethernet port for next to the usb port. Is it for hooking a hard drive to the monitor then using the Ethernet port to access the HDD? Maybe some of the thickness is due to a beefy Power brick in the monitor inteside?
Besides it being way overpriced...would not a VA panel have been better then IPS?

It should have a name like Bentley or McLaren.

My guess is that all the extra hardware is for color look-up tables. I'm not really sure what this entails, but the majority of the article that was linked was spent discussing the ability to create, store and transfer these look-up tables.

Why (or when) is 16:10 preferable to 16:9 in video production work?

All the better to see the timing and/or positioning guides that pro stuff sometimes put in the overdraw portion of a video frame? ¯\(°_o)/¯

Why would someone want to pay $40K for this?

Designed for use in color-grading, digital intermediate (DI), CGI/animation/visual effects (VFX), and editing/finishing suites, as well as digital imaging technician (DIT) workstations on production stages and on-location “video villages,” the Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display provides full-screen 4096 x 2560 resolution with extremely high levels of color accuracy and fidelity.

If you do any of that professionally, it's probably worth it to you. If you just want to play Plants vs. Zombies on it, no, it's not a great deal.
