7870 Tahiti for $140 with MIR

Fri Nov 08, 2013 11:59 am

So I've definitely been doing some searching around as I'm considering a second card to sli with my 7870 and I came across this gem.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814131484

Apparently this is a 7870 XT, which is based on Tahiti and not Pitcairn. It's essentially a Radeon 7930. If you look up benchmarks for this you'll find that this actually falls in between a 7870 and a 7950. I didn't even know this model existed till I found it on Newegg.

A review I found with some googling: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/5120/p ... index.html

So this is a 7930 with a $140 price tag. Almost a better steal then the $90 7850. I'm still holding off as I suspect there will be just as good deals during black friday if not better.

Looking at hotdeals, it appears Dpete posted this card already, but it's on sale again: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=90015

I bought one at this price. Unfortunately it only Crossfires with 7900 series cards, but my CPU couldn't drive that much graphics hp anyway.
It could theoretically outperform even the new R9 270X so even at $175 or so it would be a bargain.

What's your take on the noise levels and temps TDI? I see a fair amount of newegg reviews saying its relatively quiet but runs on the hotter end of the spectrum.

It just got delivered according to UPS tracking haha. I'll get it in my PC after work and report back. My case's noise floor is pretty high though. Four 140mm fans and three 120mm PWM Cooler Master BladeMasters hooked to the CPU header.

I've ordered and returned one of these by accident - it was a Powercolor 7870 Myst+ edition or similar. I'm sure performance is superior to the 7870 but power consumption, board size, thermals and noise are not.
It was my fault for not checking the product specs - but these are truly bottom-of-the-barrel, massively defective Tahitis that need high voltage to run even in their cut-down, defective state.

If you don't care for size, noise, heat, or power consumption you have yourself a performance/$ bargain.
Unfortunately two of those criteria were dealbreakers for me.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

Got it installed last night. Card is dead silent in my PC at idle. To get an idea of noise/heat under load I ran the Furmark 3D test, and I noticed the fan profile is very conservative. At default settings I couldn't make it out over my case fans, but the temps did get up into the mid 80s. By setting the fan to 45% it dropped the temps into the upper 70s and was just barely audible over the case fans. To me the noise this fan makes isn't harsh so I didn't notice it too much.
I'm not overclocking it so I can't comment on how the fan does with that though.
