Winamp Eulogy

Thu Nov 21, 2013 7:59 am

I've seen it on a few other outlets, Winamp is going away! Noooooooooooooooo! I thought we could take a moment to share our fond memories of a once popular, well known piece of software.

I have fond memories as a child of sneaker-netting .it game music files to the "kids computer" with no modem and Winamp being the only thing I could find that would play it (and fit on a floppy). Then there was the time in “A-Town” in Korea where they used Winamp to play music videos downloaded from the internet in the “Juicy Bars.”

I'm actually going back to Windows from Linux (long story) and am at a loss to what I could replace Winamp with. I liked Winamp because when I was playing games I could listen to music online or make a quick playlist. Anyone have a suggestion other than download the final version?

Just because they've stopped developing it doesn't mean it's suddenly going to stop working. As long as you download a copy before the end of the year you'll still be able to use it. If you like it and it works for you, why bother looking for a replacement unless it stops working?

I've been using Clementine (http://www.clementine-player.org/) as my cross platform music player lately. It's forked from Amarok 1.4 and ported to Qt 4. The interface isn't as modular as Winamp's, but Winamp is kind of an oddity that way.

Winamp will be missed. It was a great little music player. The skins and plugins were a lot of fun, and the visualizations were always awesome. :)

It would be nice if AOL would release it to the community.

Winamp was the first music real music player I used. Going from the old Windows Media player to Winamp was like being unshackled. I've since moved on to Foobar2000 which is hands-down my favorite music player.

I used Winplay3 for years. And then Winamp came out. I loved Winamp. That silly little llama. Good times. Shoot, even when I used MusicMatch Jukebox off of a good promo deal, my actually playing was done by Winamp. I pretty much left both of them when they were bought out by AOL and Yahoo, respectively.

Still occasionally fire up Winamp 2.79, small and unobtrusive.

I remember setting up Geiss to do visualizations on a live music feed for a dance party once. Played with the audio delay within winamp itself, got there to be almost 0 lag between music and visualization. Not too bad for an AthlonXP 1800+, back in the day...

I still think its funny that Nullsoft hired the best 3rd party developers and brought them in-house: Geiss, one of the Shoutcast guys...

Have you tried Winamp Lite? It's pretty much the same as the old v2.x player, but with the fixes from the 5.x player. I use it daily.

For the simple reason that the Winamp software was regularly targeted with exploits. There were times that Winamp seemed to get more security updates than even my own browser was receiving.

That's basically the crux of the problem for me... at what point will using Winamp become unsafe due to known exploits in the wild?

That is a valid point on the security exploits. You could mitigate the threat by disabling many of the web services, I would think. I used their remote play at one point but I'll be disabling it when I go back to windows. That is, if I don't like MediaMonkey or foobar2000 enough to drop it. Even better would be if they open sourced it, but I'll keep on dreaming.

It sucks that Winamp is going down but unlike all these lame web services everyone's so in love with, the status of Nullsoft has no impact on my ability to use it so I'll still probably be whipping the llama's ass 30 years from now.

You'll probably have to run it inside 2 nested layers of virtual machines though, unless you plan to keep 30 year old hardware around to run it on!

These days I run Audacious (on Linux)... with the user interface set to "Winamp Classic" mode.

For those of you still on Windows, I suggest Foobar2000.

Oh well. I use XMMS a Linux winamp clone and have for years. My standard usage is enter the album directory and type 'xmms .', so simple. There are a variety of ways to do that but I find XMMS on almost all Linux distributions.

Winamp was (and still is) cool, though something that will get no feature or security updates is not usually a good thing (tm) in the long run. I've tried a few media players (winamp, sonique, foobar2000, mediamonkey, amarok, and probably a few others), and the main one I use now for my music is VLC.

Actually, they're going to send a guy to delete it from every single computer that has it installed. His name is Ned.
