EZ-Dock 2

Fri Nov 22, 2013 12:35 pm

I purchased a EZ-dock 2 and two WD 500GB Blue. I want to copy from Data drive D to one of the 500GB drives. After using the copy command on D drive and then the paste command to the Backup drive placed in the EZ-Dock 2 there appears a error message. "Location is not available" and nothing is copied. The drive has been formatted given a name "Backup 2" with a drive letter of "G". The drive is seated correctly. Mode setting 1 and 2 "off" & 3 "on". Looking for solutions to the problem

Sounds like a permissions issue? Make sure the logged in user has permission to write to the drive and/or run the copy with elevated (Admin) privilege.

I can cut and copy from the three other HD on the system just not to the HD seated in the EZ-Dock 2

Yes, I understand that. The potential permissions issue I'm referring to is write permission on the new drive, not read permission on the old ones.

Thank you for your help, my ignorance is profound in these matters. I have successfully started the copy and I am getting 21 MB/sec transfer rate. I have the EZ-Dock on one of two USB 3.0 ports off the mother board. Is this rate typical for a USB 3.0? Total transfer 90+ gig of data.

With a fast drive (3.0 TB Barracuda 7200.14) and a USB 3.0 docking station (BlacX 5G), I've seen 115 to 120 MB/s.

Sounds like it is operating in USB 2.0 mode. USB 3.0 should give you much faster transfer speeds than that.

Maybe you need to install some drivers to get the USB ports to operate in USB 3.0 mode? Check Device Manager and see if it is complaining about any missing drivers.

Also, what motherboard are you using? Some earlier implementations of USB 3.0 share PCIe lanes with other features and by default USB 3.0 is disabled.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

I have a Intel Core i3-2120 cpu @ 3.30 GHz installed on a Gigabyte GA-Z77M-DH3 Motherboard. This is just a business desktop, no gamin or other. My intent for the use of the EZ-Dock is for to have a easily removable HD for when I travel and need all my data. My business requires me to keep all file for a minimum of 6 years so redundant back is desirable in case of fire or other disaster. How long is data stable on a mechanical or SSHD if stored in a safety deposit box?
