OCZ is dead...

Wed Nov 27, 2013 12:27 pm

I've been watching the not-so-slow decline of OCZ over the last 3 years or so.

Today the coffin is pretty much nailed shut. OCZ stopped trading on the NASDAQ because its share price is too low.

OCZ has been hemorrhaging money for years now, and its financials were a year late last quarter. They've got no money, a loan at well over 15%, a super high cash burn rate, and revenue declining at an incredible rate. Furthermore, they've been trying to shift to enterprise, but who would buy enterprise tech from a company that's going to go under?

Well, maybe those who own Vertexes can hope that somebody will scoop them up and honor the warranties...although perhaps it's much more likely the IP will just get sold in bankruptcy.

Sell the PC Power & Cooling unit before you go under.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

OCZ has been through a couple of "rebirths" and each time they promised to increase quality control and rebuild their reputation.
Broken promises do not attract customers, it had to end - and I'm shocked they survived this long.

The sad news is for all the firms they've swallowed up over the years. Companies like Indilinx and PCP&C stick out as notable casualties.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

Good riddance. I'm sure the few of the actually valuable and knowledgeable workers there will be able to easily find similar jobs elsewhere, under a competent management team.

This, the useful engineers will get hired, the business end of OCZ needs to fail as that's how capitalism is supposed to take out companies that dump shady crap on unsuspecting consumers over and over.

I'm sure some "IP" will show up in a troll operated toll-bridge law firm though, sigh.

They are probably drawing the papers as we speak. They might announce any minute now. I think as a business they had it coming. I just hope that those talented people under incompetent management get a good job. But I guess in real life, the pigs are the ones that get the golden parachutes, and the hard workers the shaft. When it comes to the auction block they will raid the very little value left of the company- IP.

What's really sad is that they had the best controller behind Intel's 7300-series for sustained workloads. I sure hope someone picks them up and pushes them to market.

As for PCP&C... well, I'm a Seasonic fan :).

Looks like the current management is attempting to sell the smoldering train wreck to Toshiba. I see that as a good thing, as it means the IP will be going to a company that actually produces mass storage devices rather than a patent trolling firm. If the Toshiba deal falls through, they plan to liquidate.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

This explains all those "refurb" sales on OCZ drives I've seen lately. People reported the drives seemed brand new. They were liquidating their warehouse inventory in a hurry and wanted to offer little to no warranty service on said drives.

So they sold them at insanely low prices as fast as possible in a firesale manner.

Everything must go...

...including OCZ.

I won't miss them. They never really got past their long history of shoddy quality control, starting way back in the day with their blatant lies regarding their memory kits. I was shocked when reviewers tried to defend OCZ after their post-SSD growth made reviewers want to like their SSD's despite the company that was pushing them being unreliable...

I guess with OCZ drives YMMV is a given, but I've been on the 2.25 "update" (it came out over a year ago!) and have had no problems. Actually, I've never had any problems, ever, with any firmware revision. The flashing utility feels a bit sketchy, but it's over quick.

Really, I hope PC Power and Cooling finds some way to survive. I really like their PSUs. I actually have one that I had refurbished recently. I'm glad I did. Still a great PSU, even after 8 years.

Oh no. I just mailed in an RMA OCZ Vector 256GB drive. I hope I get it back!

Edit: Just checked my RMA status and noticed this:

Received Date: 2013-11-27
Replaced Date: 2013-11-27

That was a close call! It's on it's way back to me. Maybe I was their last RMA ;)

I'm really surprised by this news though. I have been extremely impressed with the latest iteration of their drives and their support is fantastic. Real pity that this is all affected by management.

This is an interesting question, actually - no company handles rebates themselves, right? They always hire it out.
