So I'm up in Canada and NCIX has this 4670k for $235

I already have an motherboard, the MSI Z87 G45 Gaming

Do you think it'll get any cheaper this year or should I just buy it now?

I'm not in that much of a dire need for my desktop to be up and running anytime soon since I still have old current one running

That's probably about as good as it gets. What CPU do you run now? The in-class performance difference between Haswell and previous generations is very small.

That's an enormous improvement over what you have, definitely go for it. A good quad-core CPU like the 4670k will last you a very, very long time.

Intel hasn't had much reason to drop prices much these days. Even if you wait a year you'll probably save what, $10?

Will Kaveri launch or Boxing day be any cheaper?

Intel doesn't drop CPU prices unless there's competition or new SKUs bumping the old ones down a level. Neither actually happens anymore outside the budget models. Black Friday and Cyber Monday will be the only real price cuts ya will probably see on high-end chips.

The worst way to lose value is to have new hardware, in your case the motherboard, sitting there gathering dust. You should get a running system asap. Even if you have to "overpay" a bit, at least you enjoy it already.

You already spent some $150 bucks for the motherboard, and it is sitting here doing nothing. I can't say this is not a bigger waste than that $30 difference, unless your friend also just bought the thing and not use it after buying it.

This is why, you buy when you really need, not piecemeal over the course of a rather long span of time (more than a month, for instance). Idle hardware is worst. You could have saved the cash at the time, and let inflation devalue stuff further. Making things a more value buy the longer you wait. The only exception here is RAM, but then again, once you buy it, you start to lose warranty. So for people who bought RAM last year at low prices and yet to buy a system around the RAM, now they fire up a new system and turned out the RAM is bad, good luck with that.

You can save a lot of money by playing daily deals and major sales. Devaluation only works for the first three months or so after a release, then everything settles into a stable price (give or take the aforementioned sales) until the product finally gets dropped because OEMs are evil price-fixers market balance has been achieved.

That being said, once you see a legitimately good deal it's good to jump on it because while there's a chance that a future sale will drop the price further, there's an even bigger chance that it won't. I've scrooged myself out of a lot of fantastic bargains over the years because I held off thinking maybe someone could do a few percentage points better.

Be it known to all that I went and got an 4670k + Total War Rome II for $230. Pretty happy that I didn't wait any longer and with Kaveri being as it is, I thinks it was a good choice to have gone I5.
