New headphones advice

Sat Nov 30, 2013 10:38 am

Hi Guys,

My trusty SC Aviators have bit the bullet, so now looking for a replacement. Budget around 200CDN$.

I listen to a wide variety of music, mainly alt-rock, metal, some Johnny Cash, and some 80's pop. Source is usually my iPhone 5, iPod classic.. lossless CD rips, and stuff downloaded from iTunes.

I was satisfied with the sound from my old cans, but wouldn't mind something nicer. iPod controls nice, but I can live without. Definitely want closed, I commute a lot, like to block out some of the ambient noise.

So far considering the Sennheiser 380P, AT M50..

Thanks

Checked in to see why no one was commenting- then I realized that you aren't looking for headphones to play games :).

Both great choices.

Also consider the AKG K271 and Aiaiai TMA-01, both great closed headphones for a decent price.

For a $200 set of closed headphones, I've been eyeing the SoundMagic HP100s.

Reviews at Head-Fi

The lower 32 Ohm impedance should mean they will perform well without an amplifier, out of an ipod. Edit: On the other hand, the sensitivity is a bit low at 95 db/mw, so it may be worthwhile picking up a cheaper portable amp such as a Fios if you go with these for on-the-go. Supposed to be fairly neutral/detailed, yet with a bit more bass than you'd find on other neutral-oriented HPs (like the AKG K721)

The sell these at Amazon.com, but if in Canada, get them at MP4nation
