Cyber Monday Deals

Sun Dec 01, 2013 9:18 pm

Has anyone seen anything worthwhile?

I'm looking in particular for deals on RAM, HDDs, and and possibly HSF/one of those swanky Corsair water coolers.

I haven't seen any while looking around this morning. In particular I was looking for a new drive as one of my HDs apparently picked up a bunch of bad blocks over the last few weeks. (Why doesn't Windows warn you when that happens since it clearly knows about the bad blocks and logs them in the Event Log?) Didn't see anything special on Newegg/Frys/Amazon. In fact prices were higher on some items today than they were on Black Friday.

And since I'm complaining... Why does Amazon now have to charge sales tax on my items? :( That's something new in the last month.

The 3.0 TB Seagate ST3000DM001 Barracuda 7200.14 is $105 at Amazon at the moment. It was $100 at Newegg over the weekend, but it's up to $120 now.

You can get it for $85½ if you pay with V.me at TigerDirect or $105½ if you don't.

Newegg is just spitting out deals that didn't sell out during their Thanks Giving sale. Pretty much everywhere I look it's non-eventful. Neweggs deals were pretty meh this year as well. I think they had a couple decent deals that were below normal pricing (mainly on refurbished or remanufactured stuff), but otherwise it wasn't anything in special. It all seems to be in line with their normal prices. Maybe $10 cheaper, but you get a better selection if you just watch their Newsletter. Nothing special on Amazon either.

It seems as though online retailers aren't really offering good deals anymore and are just preying on the 'black friday' thing. Build a bunch of hype and get people to buy things that are pretty much the same price they are usually.

Newegg had 3TB externals on sale for $90 last year for instance.

Ok, instead of complaining (which I've already done) I figured I'd throw out a good deal:

Asus 23.8" IPS Monitor for $120 after MIR and Promo Code.

Even without the MIR that Asus monitor is a pretty good deal.

I am attempting to lay in parts for a new rig in the new year. So far:

Over at Corsair's outlet store yesterday I got a refurbed H100i--THE swanky water cooler--for $60. A steal.

At Amazon got an ASUS 12X Blu ray drive for $46 delivered but then with $20 rebate. Pretty good.

Also at Amazon Crucial M500 480GB SSD for $269. Another steal; nothing lower around.

Amazon i7-4770K for $289--no real deal.

My credit card points I used are now gone and hoping for X-mas gift certificates.

I like the price but I've only had two drives die on me in the last ten years. Both drives were Seagates and both died within a year of purchase. Buying another one, even at a good price, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Also doesn't help when I see more bad reports on Seagates in customer reviews than on WD or Toshiba/Hitachi.

Newegg has a few deals on RAM. I bit on this set of GSkill 2x8GBs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231560

I almost bought 16GB Gskill 2133mhz 2(2x4gb) kits on newegg.ca as well.... but then I remembered I already had RAM and 8GB isn't slowing me down in any games.

All the marketing hysteria is getting to me and I'm trying to avoid buying parts I don't actually need.

Although if there was a serious deal on a GTX 780 I would have probably jumped on one....

It's great that RAM manufacturers are pulling a profit again, but can't we find a happy medium between todays prices and the $5/GB of the (not too distant) good-'ol-days?

I know that before the days of $5/GB, prices were higher than they are today. #1st World Problems.

Right? Up until a little while ago we said similar things about hard drives and The Flood. I think hard drives are nearly back to pre-flood prices, but I worry abut the future of DRAM. Maybe the advent of DDR4 will change the scene.

Also I guess that RAM deal is sold out now. Sorry OP.
