R7 260X?

Postposted on Sat Dec 14, 2013 12:34 pm

I just spent $150 or so bringing my seven year old Dell Dimension E520 as close to current as possible. Replaced the tired old Pentium D with a Q6600, upgraded the 2GB of sluggish memory to four 1GB DDR2-800 sticks, and replaced the dying 250GB HDD with a 120GB Agility 3. I also replaced the noisy and broken fan, but that's less important.

Anyway, I'm looking for a good card for not much money to replace the original passively cooled X1300. I would like to run games like BF4 at 1080, but I'm obviously not looking to max out the settings. Game bundles are always nice, but right now they seem to be pretty scarce compared to a few months ago. I'd go all out on a R9 270 or something, but I feel like even that caliber of card would just be bottlenecked by the processor and memory. Plus it's a little over budget.

So, I was mostly looking at the R7 260X. When TR reviewed it, the price was nearly $150 and it didn't include a bundle. Now there's an XFX model on the Egg for $120 plus a $10 MIR and two free games. Depending on how you look at it, that brings the effective cost of the card down to $20. I'd say that's a steal for a card that performs somewhere between a 7790 and a 650 Ti Boost. What do you guys think? Is there a better deal than this for a card that will get me to that next level of performance without being hindered by the other still relatively outdated specs, or should I just pull the trigger on this one?

If your OS is 32bit, you will only be able to play the 32bit version of BF4, which can't let you change graphical settings (all in low). A 260X will be enough for that. 4Gb of RAM and your CPU will hurt your performance in 64 player maps.

If you manage to have the 64 bit OS, maybe that card can push medium settings at 1080p. But you probably are aware that the machine you have will struggle a bit in some newer games

It's a 64-bit OS. I know it's going to have problems, especially with the now ancient IPC of the processor. If I have to turn the settings down to low and maybe turn the res down a bit that's fine, I just want to play the game.

If the bundled games are worth that much to you, then go for it... but I think you're overvaluing the games by a bit. Do you plan on moving that card to a future system?

They're all recent games that would probably cost about $40 anyway, and Newegg values the game coupon at $80. I plan on keeping the card in this system and going all out on a brand new build early(ish) next year. Upgrading this old Dell was more of a gift to my mother than anything else, but there are some games I'm itching to play so the card is a little something for myself.
