Win a G-Sync conversion kit for the Asus VG248QE monitor

Mon Dec 16, 2013 12:42 pm

Would you like a healthy dollop of creamy smoothness as part of your Christmas holiday? If you already own one of Asus' nifty 144Hz VG248QE monitors, we may be able to help you out.

Nvidia has offered us some do-it-yourself kits that will add G-Sync capability to this Asus gaming monitor, and we're giving them away to five lucky readers.

Image

Who can enter
Since we'll be shipping you a kit to modify a particular display, this giveaway has some very specific entry requirements. Basically, your system has to be ready to accept the upgrade module, and you have to be willing to provide feedback on your experience with it. Here are the specifics:

  • You must currently own an Asus VG248QE monitor.
  • You'll need to have one of the G-Sync-compatible video cards here: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/g-sync/supported-gpus.
  • You must be willing and able to modify your monitor by installing the kit.
  • You agree not to re-sell the kit.
  • You agree to provide the TR community feedback on your G-Sync gaming experience. We're just looking for an honest set of impressions in a forum post, nothing fancy.
  • You must be a resident of the U.S. or Canada (except Quebec).

How to enter
If you meet all of these requirements and want to enter, here's to how do so.

First, write your TR username on a piece of paper, prop it up next to your Asus VG248QE monitor, and snap a picture. Then post a reply in this forum thread with the picture embedded.

That's it, really. We'll pick five winners from random out of the pool of entrants, and you'll be notified via private message here on the forums if you've won.

Even more rules, jeez
Some further regulations, since we need to cover our rears:

We will be accepting giveaway entries until December 23, 2013 at 9AM Central Time, at which point this thread will be locked. TR staffers will then confer and select winners from among all eligible entries. The winners will be announced on the site on December 23 and will also be notified via private message in the forums. Each winner must claim their prize within 72 hours, or they will forfeit their prize, and we will draw a new winner from the pool of contestants.

We reserve the right to disqualify entries that are apparent attempts to game the system or circumvent the rules in any way.

The staff of The Tech Report and their immediate families may not enter the giveaway and are not eligible to win.

No purchase is necessary. This giveaway is void where prohibited by law. TR, Nvidia, and Asus are not responsible for any taxes on the prizes, damage in shipping, damage caused by using the prizes with other products, or health issues that may result from prolonged use of the prizes.

Crud, I have a VW266H, which has gotten dim and a few scratches, and I've been thinking about replacing it. I'll have to hope for lots of Xmas gift cards, and order the appropriate monitor!

I'll make you a deal... You give me one of kits and I'll get you a Newegg receipt by the end of the day! I'll install it and give you my impressions and anything else you want.
I've been thinking of getting an VG248QE but I wanted to wait and see the actual price of the monitor with G-Synch installed and the kit price. I just got me a bonus check so I can get one. :D

Also, here's the link on its own, just in case: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4509246/AmazingMrX_VG248QE_TR.JPG

I've got a GTX 680 hooked up to this guy, and a Steam library loaded with 162 games to try, so I'm all ready for a G-Sync kit!

Long time lurker of TR. I bought the VG248QE because I play a bit of competitive FPSes. I really would like to see how G-Sync compares to 120hz using lightboost (which is amazing, btw).

Ah my god, I want it, I have a VG248QE, I game all the time... and I stream! But apparently Nvidia doesn't want to add my Radeon 7870 to the list of supported video cards. :(

I'll probably end up buying this kit at a later date if AMD decides to support G-Sync (or Nvidia lets them).

You know, if TR wanted to loan out a 660Ti... I'd definitely be able to do this... :D

Well I hope you get one and let us FPS players know how it goes and compares. I play BF4 mostly and you can't even play with V-Synch on . One minute you miss, the you tons of hit markers and can't kill anyone, So, I took the V-Synch off, set the games max FPS rate at 60 and put up with some jumpiness, taring and other artifacts.

Hmm, seems like it might be time to update the Dell 2007WFP.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Sorry the photos are fuzzy. My cellphone isn't that good of a camera, but it's the only one I have.

Anyways, if I get one of the modules, I'll be willing to put up pictures of the installation process and then use FRAPS and FCAT to show how well it works.

I'd also like to comment on how well it eliminates motionblur, similar to what the guys over at blurbusters review.

Proof of a compatible video card

Far out view of the system so you can tell I didn't awkwardly hijack a display at a local microcenter.

*cries* I have a sponsor!

7870 is pretty much a 660Ti, so it seems like a apples to apples comparison to me. Honestly I doubt there is really going to be a downside here. It sounds like magical V-Sync that has no downsides.

  • You must currently own an Asus VG248QE monitor.
    I'd be willing to buy a VG248QE (It's only $300).
I currently have a ASUS VE258Q, that I'm going to donate to my local Ambulance Corp. They need some good monitors too ya know!?
  • You'll need to have one of the G-Sync-compatible video cards on this list.
I have an ASUS 660 Ti that's on the list.
  • You must be willing and able to modify your monitor by installing the kit.
I'm pretty handy with a screw driver and sodder. iFixit quite often.
  • You agree not to re-sell the kit.
No problem. I'm a gamer, this is gaming tech.
  • You agree to provide the TR community feedback on your G-Sync gaming experience. We're just looking for an honest set of impressions in a forum post, nothing fancy.
I'm happy to do that. I'm told seeing is believing, and I can articulate fairly well.
  • You must be a resident of the U.S. or Canada (except Quebec).
    Levittown, NY, USA here.

Hey guys, thanks for the contest!

You must currently own an Asus VG248QE monitor.

Image

You'll need to have one of the G-Sync-compatible video cards here: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technol ... orted-gpus.

Image

You must be willing and able to modify your monitor by installing the kit.

More than willing.

You agree not to re-sell the kit.

I agree not to resell the kit.

You agree to provide the TR community feedback on your G-Sync gaming experience. We're just looking for an honest set of impressions in a forum post, nothing fancy.

I am more than happy to provide an honest opinion on my G-Sync experience. I am currently running Strobelight, so I'd be able to make a comparison about 120Hz strobed vs G-Sync.

You must be a resident of the U.S. or Canada (except Quebec).

I live in Chicago, Illinois.

I've been following this since they announced G-Sync and I've gotta say I'm very excited. Also, it's awesome that you guys are giving us a chance to win a kit to upgrade our monitors and see the difference for our self. I'd be happy to give feedback on this for sure!

Better pictures would be included in the feedback
