Which brings up the question of running "pure" android; Utilizing only apps from the play store or downloaded from sites.
Or running stock hmmm...say, Samsung apps native to the device that one assumes contain no malware.
Indeed, something can be said for only running stock/upgraded apps from the manufacturer.
Saw a study: >10% Android apps have been utilized/crafted for oft theme purposes.
IOW, many Free apps are not made for the good of the community.
Money talks.

Running Google-made and -recommended Play apps on stock Jelly Bean up to 4.3x on Google hardware is the least risky way to go in terms of availability, security, and software assurance. This will be limiting for intrepid owners who prioritize development or homebrew/DIY stuff over critical comms. But there's too much threat surface and active exploits wilding on other combinations for worry-free consumer use. Except for certain secure packages validated by NSA which deliver appliance-style benefits to their contractor and agency users but also limit their sources. For consumers who buy insecure stuff, the more they stay within the Google brand the closer they are to this privileged circle.

Hi friends, welcome to CM.

IMO, custom ROMs are the only way to go with Android. Yeah yeah, you might lose some gimmicky functionality, but you gain so much more that is actually useful.
i7 6700K - Z170 - 16GiB DDR4 - GTX 1080 - 512GB SSD - 256GB SSD - 500GB SSD - 3TB HDD- 27" IPS G-sync - Win10 Pro x64 - Ubuntu/Mint x64 :: 2015 13" rMBP Sierra :: Canon EOS 80D/Sony RX100

ha, personal privacy, IMO, is right up there with the tooth fairy.

Mandated backdoors through gov agencies is just the "maybe" legal means to exploit anything, anywhere.

Malware has no limitations regarding "legal".

As with most things in life: We are rolling the dice every day.
