VHS to Digital

Mon Dec 23, 2013 8:11 am

So I have some home movies and stuff from college on VHS that I would like to transfer to a digital format. I know its exactly not going to be clean or clear but I would like to get as good of a picture as possible. So what hardware and software would I need to do this? Tips or tricks? (I think Roxio sells a 'kit'?)

I always thought that to do this I'd want to get an expensive VHS player, like one of those professional-style $600+ models that would read the tapes as good as possible. Not sure how a consumer 'kit' would read a decrepit tape.

There are plenty of little consumer things.

https://www.roxio.com/enu/products/easy ... rview.html

Those are inexpensive enough you wouldn't feel awful if they didn't come out amazing.

I am using Haupauge WinTV-HVR-1600 PCIe card(Presently available model is -2250). It comes with a video capture software which can, unlike Roxio software, display the capturing video in full screen. I am also using Hauppauge Colossus PCIe card to primarily record HD video from HDMI or Components. But this card can also be used to capture S or composit video. You may want to consider the latter if you are also interested in video recording in HD.

I've been playing around with a Hauppage HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition, it can capture pretty much anything composite, component, HDMI (not HDCP, unless you have one of those magical splitters..). It will do 1080p@60Hz also whereas the Colossus will only do 1080i, not really important for your use but it maybe a consideration.

The Hauppage devices will encode in h.264 internally. Something like A BlackMagic Intensity or DeckLink Mini Recorder would allow you to capture it all uncompressed and then encode it whatever way you want afterwards if you require that, but they also require more horsepower and lots of fast storage space.
