Windows 8/8.1: Recommended Store/Metro apps

Mon Dec 30, 2013 3:01 pm

Just wanted to create a thread to discuss if anyone has nice app suggestions about Metro/Store apps in Windows 8.
Please keep this discussion to recommended Metro apps only. I know many of you hate Windows 8, but there are many threads where you can vent about that, so please keep on topic.

I use Windows 8.1 on a run-of-the-mill 15.6'' laptop with a non-touch 1366x768 screen. Here are some apps I like:

1) Netflix: I find it it nicer than the browser/silverlight version
2) Nook: I use it to read some DRM-free epubs I have and works very well for that.
3) Songza: Nice for exploring music in a particular genre/mood
4) Tweetium: Very nice twitter client. paid but worth it.
5) Economist: Provides a nice immersive full-screen experience. Useful for subscribers only though.
6) Bing weather
7) CBC news
8 ) Podcasts! for podcast subscription. Slapdash Pro also works ok-ish but experienced app freezes.

My favorite by far is Zite. I also use and enjoy USA Today. Netflix also makes it on my home page, and might I add 'New on Netflix' to that list to keep you updated on new Netflix releases ?

For audio apps, I use SoundHound and TuneIn Radio. Both are quite popular and receive well earned scores from users.
AMD Ryzen R5 2600x, Asus Prime x470 Pro, Sapphire Nitro Fury 4GB, HP EX920 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro, 4TB WD Red HDD, Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Ed, Win 10 Pro

Zite does not appear to be available in the Windows Store, perhaps you are talking about Zite for Windows Phone instead?
