Which Blu-ray burner to get?

Tue Dec 31, 2013 4:05 pm

Hey guys, I was thinking its about time to get a BR burner and I would like some input on quality, speed, reliability etc. . . of different options available on the market now.
I have been waiting for quite a while bu i think that BR is now mature enough and becoming prevalent on many different platform so its time to get a burner :P

Thx for the input and if you have some good review website links for them i'd appreciate too.

I've had good luck with LG Blu-ray burners. They're quieter than my LiteOn Blu-ray drives.

This slim slot-loading Blu-ray drive is noticeably slower than the standard half-height 5¼" drive linked above, but it fits into notebooks or very compact SFF cases with slim optical bays.

You can even stick the slim drive in a regular bay if you're so inclined.

Thx for the info, i've always had good luck with my LG CD and DVD drives in the past so maybe ill stick with it.

And full size is perfect, its gonna go into a CM Storm Sniper BE so space is not the issue lol.
Motherboard is an Asrock Z77 OC Formula so plenty of Sata 2 and 3 available as well.

Guess i should've mentioned these 2 in the first post.

Y'know, I got one (an LG IIRC) a couple of years ago, with the intent of using it to burn backups; but I've only really ever used it as a CD/DVD drive. Mostly for ripping audio CDs. What a waste!

The role of writable optical media in PCs is greatly diminished from what it was 5-10 years ago. Cheap hard drives (get a dock and use bare drives as backup media) and thumbdrives (for moving files between PCs that aren't networked) have eliminated two of the main reasons for having a burner.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Agreed.
I have the Thermaltake BlacX 5G dock. I keep finding good deals on 3 TB hard drives when I need more storage. I've also got a USB Flash Drive.

If you don't really need to burn Blu-ray discs, you may be able find a deal on a drive that just reads them.

Well i was thinking of making movie collection onto 1 disc, like all movie from a same actor on 1 disc or something. even if it doesnt fit on 1 it still takes less room than having all these movies per disc in your DVD/BLuray shelf lol.

Now one question i forgot is i was looking at burnable media and i only saw 25 GB blank CD. I though you could put 50GB but i guess thats on dual layered. Are those available as blank and can burner actually burn dual layers or is 25GB the most i will get from current consumer bluray technology?

I'm seeing USB2 16G for under $10 all over, and I even found a USB2 32G for $17. They are getting real cheap. My 16G USB2 keychain has been golden for many years ... LOL, I go to look at it, and there is nothing, everything is worn off. Still works fine. Even USB2 is faster than BD and I think more durable.
