Hey guys, I'm posting on the behalf of a friend, she's got troubles !

Recently installed a Samsung 840 Pro 256gb, installed windows 7, firmware uptodate, NTFS, and all that, but then the size doesn't match, there is 138gb used and only 100 Gb free even though she didn't installed anything.

Whatsup with that any hint ?

It's not like win7 takes so much space .

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

That looks correct. Drive manufacturers list capacity in powers of 10 (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes, 1 gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes), whereas Windows uses powers of 2 (1KB = 1024 bytes, 1MB = 1,048,576 bytes, 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes).

The 256GB 840 Pro has a capacity of around 256,000,000,000 bytes. 256,000,000,000 divided by 1,000,000,000 is 256 manufacturer gigabytes; 256,000,000,000 divided by 1,073,741,824 is 238.4 gigabytes as reported by windows.

Everything checks out, the drive is fine.


Edit: Or did you mean there shouldn't be 138GB used by the things that have been installed so far?

nope not a single thing. that's the weird thing ! Oops sorry I maybe forgot to mention that in the main post .

But I said just windows 7 cannot take so much space !

Run something like WinDirStat against the C drive to see what's taking your space. Do you have a lot of RAM in the machine? Paging file and hibernation file can take up lots of space if you have 16GB of memory without changing any settings. http://windirstat.info/download.html

Oh good idea didn't thought about that thanks, will check, she just tryed to highlight the files and there was 20gb i think but maybe with a program like that it will show.

ahh yea actually I should have think about that =), the problem was a huge pagefile cause she have 64Gb RAM (lol) and also a hibersomething file that she deleted, problem fixed !

While innocent curiosity of how she uses the machine is perfectly fine, and even important information in some contexts, I feel the tone of the conversation is beginning to stray into the wrong direction.

Why she wants or needs that much memory (or how much it would cost) is entirely immaterial to the help request.

I'd recommend at least a small pagefile.sys even with that much memory; maybe just 1GB. That'll give the kernel a little room to deal with unused data and a small bit of leeway in the event of extreme use or memory leak.

hiberfil.sys is where hibernation and hybrid sleep data is stored. If those are desired features it can be made small, but only up to a point.

Run this from an Admin Command Prompt: powercfg /h /size 50

This will shrink the hiberfil.sys down to 32GB. I'm afraid it can't be made any smaller.

Getting rid of the hiberfil.sys is safe, but you will lose the aforementioned features.

My bad - I think I started that and didn't realize I was running afoul of the rules - No need to answer, I just figured it would certainly be something interesting to justify that kind of expense in RAM as well the accompanying machine that could accommodate it.

plenty of uses could justify that level of ram.
severs, running tons of vm, multiclienting on various games, botting on 30 accounts simultaneously on a mmorpg, running a ram drive for increased performance when the ssd is too slow, extreme video editing and rendering, massive 3D rendering art work, extreme multi tasking with 100 programs and never closing any programs etc etc etc. I have 16GB on my home pc, and there are times when i run out and am looking to get more... really its not that unusual to need as much as you can get.

When you have a large amount of ram, hibernation is a hassle... and if you have a ups, sleep mode is perfectly fine.

It's okay! There's nothing wrong with curiosity. I'm just making sure the tone doesn't slip into a negative place.

e.g.

"Nobody needs that much."
"That was too much money"
"Justify your expense to us."
"You're doing it wrong."

Etc.
