Best CPU for Aged System

Thu Jan 09, 2014 10:24 pm

Hi Gerbils, I have been looking for a new CPU to extend some of the life left in my scraped together system. However I am somewhat confused by the motherboard's approved CPU list as there seems to me at least inconsistencies with CPU support. For example most of the Phenom II X4 8XX series has been skipped, as I am currently tracking down a X4 840, which has the Propus core. The list shows other Propus based CPUs but not the 840. Would it be too risky to try it or should I try and find one on the approved list? I know putting money into a dead system like this isn't really worth it but if I can get squeeze some life out of this for under $60 then I would like to try. So I guess which CPU would be the most best to match the rest of my system in sig? Thanks in advance.

Your motherboard supports other 95-watt socket-AM3 Propus processors. With the latest BIOS, it might handle the Phenom II X4 840 as well.

I thought it might, as I assumed BIOS revisions that included new CPU cores, would not be excluded to certain models, except the higher TDP ones. I'm in the works on getting a X4 840. Hopefully it works out. I'd like to find a X955 95W TDP, but people on ebay want way to much, could buy a used cpu/mobo and ram for a little more than they are going for.

Just thought I would update, the X4 840 is recognized by the mobo and working just fine. It seems that Foxconn was either unable to obtain all possible CPUs to confirm compatibility or just used ones of different core that were similar. Either way the system is a little quicker.
