I dont know where to put this but this looks like the place.

Has anyone built a XBMC machine using the Raspberry Pi? I've been reading up on doing this and it looks interesting. Some questions come to mind that I have been finding conflicting answers for:

1. Will it do 1080p playback from a USB drive. Or even streaming?
2. Can it do Netflix and Amazon Prime? Even grabbing their HD offerings?

Yes

Yes to both

No, XBMC cannot play DRM'd content from online services and Netflix and AP do not provide linux clients.

You best bet is to head over to http://raspbmc.com and catch up.

There are a few out there and Sam is doing awesome work on raspbmc.
There are also linxbmc and openELEC

all are comprehensive installs that handle setup for you.

As for Netflix - no but they are working on it, usually implemented using streaming from a Windows PC.

other DRM content - no, they have to be able to grab the DRM key from the source and not many vendors are interested in letting them.

Nope. Their workaround involves a wrapper that allows a Linux browser to load the Microsoft Silverlight DLLs. This will only work on x86 based systems; Raspberry Pi is a non-starter since it uses an ARM CPU and Microsoft has not ported Silverlight to ARM.

Hmmm. I still may try it. I loved XBMC back in the day.

There is one possibility for actually netflix working on the Raspberry Pi but it depends on a proper Android release for the Pi.

This will never happen. Although Android was promised for the Pi at one point something happened to stop it and the Raspberry Pi Foundation aren't telling, they just quietly removed their Android forum.

My advice as a long-time Pi owner would be to forget the Pi entirely and buy a CuBox-i instead. Android is being run on those right now. Unfortunately SolidRun have already sold out of every CuBox-i model and the next batch isn't due to be shipped until around late March.

Thats a shame.
