What cooler should I get for an i7-2600K

Fri Jan 10, 2014 5:19 pm

I got an i7-2600K off eBay. Stupidly, I didn't read the auction listing very closely and it didn't come with the stock fan. I can get a stock fan for it off eBay pretty easily, but it is about $30 once I factor in cross boarder shipping. I looked on NCIX and I can get a number of CPU coolers for that much or less. Would this be a better idea? I don't plan on overclocking this system, but if I can get a better cooler for under $30, why not?

Also will I need any additional parts? Will the cooler come with thermal paste, screws, etc?

Do you plan on overclocking or running stock? If memory serves me, the Cooler Master 212 EVO is fantastic for the price.

At stock, anything for socket 1155 will do, the 2600K is a pretty tame chip in terms of heat output.

For mild overclocking I'll also back the Coolermaster solutions - they're cheap and perform well:

Hyper 212 Evo, Hyper 412S etc.

I'll third the suggestion of the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo.

I'll be running stock, as this is already far more powerful of a processor then I need.

Will that coolmaster come with everything I need or do I need to buy separate thermal paste and such? Would I be safe saving some money and buying the open box one they have?

The new-in-box version would come with everything that you need. I don't know what NCIX's policy is for open-box items.
You can see the contents of the box by clicking on the 6th photo on the Newegg product page:

If the 35 CAD price of the Hyper 212 Evo is too high and you have no intention of overclocking and you don't need complete silence, a 92 mm cooler like the Hyper TX3 would be $12½ less expensive.

Wow, given the overwhelming support I'll get that one. Thanks all.

Wow, I installed the cooler on the weekend and that thing is HUGE. I can't use the first RAM channel due to the size, so I am hoping everything is OK with me using the second set of channels (1/3 instead of 0/2). Also man, that backplate was a pain to install. Anyway, I don't think I'll have any trouble keeping this thing cool, provided I got the thermal paste on correctly. (I watched a couple vids. I think I may have put on too much, but I'm not sure. I hope it squished all the way out to the edges though :S)

The good thing with a huge cooler is that you have have a very low RPM fan with very low noise. That's whats really the good thing with large air coolers, not the fact that you can get a bit extra cooling for overclocking.
I have a 2600K with that I set to turbo up to 4.2. Stock voltage, never breaks 50ºCm and really silent, that said, the silence is thanks to the huge Coolermaste V8.

Sadly, I'm using an old hand-me-down case, and it wires the case fans to the power supply, not the motherboard, which I'm guessing means they run constantly, doesn't it? So I think I just lost the quite factor. Also, the fans from my old case are too large to replace them with, so *shrug*. I guess I'll have to deal with it.

When I asked the same question back in december, everybody pointed to the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo. I bought, installed it, and couldn't be happier. I've let my Asus set the high performance OC preset in the BIOS, and the now my 2600K runs happily at 4.0GHz.

Not too shabby for a $36 piece of hardware! :D

Actually, I have a couple of case fans that have a low/med/high setting, but the rest of my fans all run at full speed, but I bought quiet fans, that dont make much noise, mainly a bunch of papst, but have a few others. Actually changed out the CPU fan yasterday to a revoltec I had lying around since the one that came with the Coolermaster V8 had gotten way to dusty and started making vibrations.

So you dont need to voltage or rpm control your fans if you bought quiet ones to begin with. If you dont have that option, it's another matter.

My 2600K runs with Turbo of 4.2 with the V8, all below 50C.

On mine I moved the fan to the back of the heatsink so it wouldn't be blocking DIMM slots. You can move the clips to the other side of the fan if you want the air to still blow towards the back of the case.

I think I'll just drill some holes in the case to mount the larger fans and plug them into the motherboard. Hopefully I won't totally have to dissemble the computer to do that; I managed to take the top off the case only taking the power supply out. So, with luck I'll just take the front and back case panels into the machine shop at my uni and get some holes drilled in there. Gotta buy those guys a drink; today they are cutting me a hole in the plexiglass from the top of the case, so my power supply fan has somewhere to vent too (It was designed to mount on the bottom of the case.

I also scavenged some old fans that plug into the motherboard from the broken computer pile. Is there an easy way to tell how they measure up to the other fans I have?
