Remove Mushkin Blackline Heat Spreaders?

Wed Feb 12, 2014 12:59 pm

I goofed in ordering. On this particular work machine, the CPU cooler doesn't sit on top of the RAM slots, but the HDD cage does. It closes fine over the RAM that came with the machine, but not over the replacement RAM I bought.

Most guides on removing heat spreaders say to take off the tabs, but I don't see any tabs on Mushkin Blackline heat spreaders. Do I pry? If so, from the top or the bottom? Do I use a hairdryer? Or stick them in the freezer?

If there's no way to test the RAM before disrobing it, I'd send it back - you could wind up stuck with a bad stick with no warranty otherwise.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

they probably have a thermal compound that is acting like a glue holding it on there. You would probably have to pry it off and clean off all the compound.
Why not send the ram back?

Why hazard a voided warranty? Return it and get some low profile ram.

Workaround solution: I swapped out the RAM with what was in my own workstation, which does have room for the heat spreaders. Sorry if that's not helpful for future gerbils reading this thread. :)
