Really Newegg?

Tue Feb 18, 2014 9:10 am

Newegg.com is arguably the most popular site for US enthusiasts/builders to get their PC hardware. Sometimes though, they make mistakes and/or take advantage of their market position. And with so much popularity, someone is bound to notice. Share your odd newegg finds here.

I was browsing the (almost daily) newegg email deals this morning when I noticed something strange. Cryptocurrency is all the rage these days, so obviously newegg is going to cater to this new crowd with seemingly bottomless pockets. I happened across this supercombo aimed at mining. 3 - 7970's, an anemic (cheap) CPU, mobo, some ram, PSU, etc etc. But, as I looked a little closer, something strange caught my eye. The mobo only has 2 - PCIe x16 slots.....where is that third GPU supposed to go? None of the PCIe x1 slots are open-ended.

The cards don't need an x16 slot to mine with. Miners usually use a bunch of these:

so with the right MB and adapters, you can run up to 7 cards from a single MB.

Craziness. Reminds me a bit of my old Folding@home storage crate farm!
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

But then wouldn't it make sense for newegg to include said riser in the combo?

They don't include risers probably because of how crappy the quality of most risers are. They would prefer you pick them out yourself so you can decide on powered or passive risers. Or what length you may need for your set up.

Over $1200 for the 3 7950... insane.

Makes nvidia look like geniuses with their Titan skew.

nvidia does collect high premium from the pro market, control the market availability so gamers are not scammed by re-sellers like newegg.

AMD get none of those benefits. Absolutely nothing. No extra revenue, no price control, no inventory control, no brand name for ultra high end, ...

Who is in charge of this company ?!?!! its like AMD is on automatic and nobody is at the wheel...

LOL at you making fun of AMD for selling 3 7950s for 1200.
You do realize they are basically selling out everywhere at that price right? They are not 400 because people aren't buying them, they are at that price because they are the hottest card on the market.

This whole BC/LC mining craze is just not showing any slowdown. Its too late now to make GOOD money back on your investment, but it really hurts the gamer looking at buying an AMD card that doesn't care in the least about mining. Some of those Newegg combos really do need to be checked out for full compatibility.

I have always bought Nvidia, but for my last build went AMD and picked up a Sapphire 6950 Toxic back when it was the best bang for the buck card. Ended up getting the last card Newegg had in stock at the time, and it was DOA !! Was another 2 weeks until restock, so I bought a GTX580 rather than wait any longer. Yesterday I scored an ATI 4870x2 for $40, so I hope it turns out better than the Toxic card. And no, I won't be mining with it.
AMD Ryzen R5 2600x, Asus Prime x470 Pro, Sapphire Nitro Fury 4GB, HP EX920 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro, 4TB WD Red HDD, Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Ed, Win 10 Pro

When Newegg sell 3x titan for $3000 nvidia recognize about >$1500 in revenue
When newegg sell 3x 7950 for $1200 AMD gets about $250

This is what I'm pointing out. AMD is not capitalizing on this , and its also hurting their gaming market by putting cards out of reach of buyers and making them go to the competition.

If you wanted to get a midrange card today, would you spend ~$480 for a r9-280x ? or the GTX 770 for $150 less?
And also keep in mind that nvidia most likely make more money selling you a $320 card then AMD get selling a $480 card at the moment.

Its a loose loose situation for AMD... And wait untill the secondary market get flooded with 79x0 and R9 cards by the end of the year.
And AMD is doing nothing in the past 4 month to help this situation ...

I have the feeling you'll be disappointed by the noise, power usage, and lack of performance in modern titles. :(

Still, for $40, that's a good deal.

No one is buying 3x titan. Sales are high because of mining, and Nvidia gpus can't do it well. So they can have fun selling 5 video cards to the hundreds amd is selling.

Looks like Newegg had that accounted for as well.
It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

Seem like AMD is just selling a small inventory... TR news of today "Nvidia graphics winners in Q4, AMD down"
http://jonpeddie.com/publications/market_watch/

The issue is that AMD is selling their small gaming GPU inventory to non gamers, resulting in extra sales for nvidia NOT AMD.

And this does nothing for AMD, as the card sold to miners would have been sold to gamers anyways.

Everyone benefit but AMD. retailers by selling $180 MSRP cards for $400, nvidia from collecting the gamers not being able to buy AMD cards (or making the cards unreasonable price/performance wise), miners being able to buy gamer cards for crypto currency.

AMD just predicted one of their worse month for jan-march, revenue down more then 10%... nvidia is doing fine. Check the link above. AMD GPU business is collapsing in oct-december while crypto currency on radeon was booming.

Well, I am glad I got my 7950 before prices went to crazyville. I feel really bad for people that need them right now, if you want a high end card your going to pay through the nose. On top of that, if the altcoin craze doesnt die down and the new gen cards come out and are even better...prices are going to be even more insane out the gate.
