Computer Room

Mon Feb 17, 2014 7:01 pm

The mouserug really tied the room together.

Although I hadn't seen it before, I'm going to assume this is a very old picture because that's some old fashioned furnishings; but I like what they did with the ribbon cable.

From the color I'm pretty sure the mobo is an MSI. Looks a lot like the KT4 Ultra (Darth Via KT400A) I built a Barton system around some ungodly number of years ago. I brought it to a thrift store some 5-6 years ago complete in its Antec 660 case. My guess is that it is currently sharing subterranean space with banana peels, incorruptible hot dogs, and old newspapers.

Oh, and the 40mm NB fans on those old Barton mobos died within a year and were usually replaced by a Zalman NB47 passive cooler.

look beneath the first unoccupied PCI slot: MS-6380E. The northbridge has MSI written on its heatsink.

So, MSI KT3 Ultra2? (the southbridge looks like VT8235)

Yep. The thought of locking down an Athlon XP HSF still makes me shudder.

Considering how much work it has taken me just to build a computer, install an after-market cooler, and a new fan, you people amaze me. (To be fair, this was done on a case that was very obviously not meant to be modified, and involved cutting a hole in the top of it to let the power supply breath....). But still, mine looks like a birds nest: Yours has freaking FURNITURE and ART. *Feels humbled*

According to my newegg order history, I used to actually own that motherboard.

Weird.

Trolling one's Newegg order history brings back many painful memories.

Almost as painful as viewing your list of Steam Store transactions?

"I only ever buy games that are on sale."
"Apart from that one."
"And that one"
"And those three"
"And XCOM was worth the launch price even with all the bugs"
"Yeah, that doesn't count because it was for a LAN"
"That's early access, it doesn't count".

etc

/sob.

There are differences between the KT3-Ultra and KT3-Ultra2.

For instance, it doesn't have the NB fan. http://www.anandtech.com/show/1000/2 versus http://www.anandtech.com/show/927/11

It also has the VT8235 SB versus the VT8233A.

I won't hold that against you either.

Yeah, that's a good way to get depressed, especially when you go back 10 years or so and can still see the prices you paid. Thousands on parts that are worthless now. You could have spent that money on virtually ANYTHING ELSE and it would have held more value.

Re: Computer Room

Man those were the good old days. In September 2002 (going by the Anandtech system guide for that timeframe) I had basically that very value gaming system. Radeon 8500, Tbred B Athlon XP that would hit like 2.2Ghz...I had an ABit KT7A board with 1GB of PC133 RAM and a cheaper 17" Trinitron monitor, but pretty much everything else was identical. That baby flew. Eventually the 8500 bit the dust in an overclocking experiment and I replaced it with one of those unlockable Radeon 9500 Pros that could be made into 9700 Pros with a BIOS flash or some such nonsense.

Back on topic, it looks like Glorious found an exact match for the motherboard in Ubergerbil's photo.

Heh. Been there, done that. Fortunately I don't think I've ever ordered anything more expensive than a couple of DIMMs that way.

Yeah. What bothers me most is seeing large amounts spent on computer stuff during times I know I wasn't making much money. It makes me want to go back in time and slap myself.

I am sure I am going to want to slap myself in a few years for just scaping together a gaming computer while a grad student...
