Rumor: Canon Withdrawing from Budget Compact Camera Market

Tue Feb 25, 2014 6:28 pm

Saw this on Photo Rumors:

Canon is considering to withdraw from the low-priced compact digital camera market (cameras priced under $200) and concentrate on DSLR models in the future. The company is citing plummeted compact cameras sales as a result of fast growing smartphone market.

It's hard to argue with this. Some smart phone cameras (although not even close to a majority yet) are almost as good as low-end point and shoots. Still, this shouldn't preclude Canon from competing in higher-end compact market. Here's hoping they come out with an S120 replacement that competes sensor-wise with the RX-100.

I wouldn't find this surprising at all. Indeed, I'd say if true Canon deserves some credit for making the (somewhat obvious IMO) decision to leave a dying market. The credit part comes from the fact that it'll take their competitors much longer to figure it out.

Can't say I really disagree with this decision. Smartphones are definitely "good enough" for casual photography, so there isn't much room left in the market between them and DSLRs.

Low priced CSC's are essentially smartphone caliber anyway. Bigger sensors, but lighter on the jpeg engines. Optics.... well, bigger, but more of a push.

The news makes me a bit nostalgic, is all... the Powershot A series were, in some ways, the Pentax K1000's of their time... affordable cameras that produced good images, had good ergonomics, and allowed you to learn about exposure. Then Canon introduced the Ax000 line and killed it, IMO.

This news makes me sad. I'm more than happy with my Cannon S110. Its perfect for taking photos and videos of the kids and fits in my pocket. Where as a smart phone gives crap quality, especially inside pictures.

That's budget compacts- i.e., not the G-series, not the superzooms, and not the S-series, all of which remain relatively useful when compared to the better cameras on phones where big sensors, manual controls, and decent zooms remain infeasible.

Canon probably considers the S1x0 cameras to be a "premium" compact since it has the 1/1.7" sensor, so that line should be safe for now.

Well it was $150 (Oz) when I bought it mid last year. I was looking at the Sony RX100 but the cannon was so cheap I bought 2 and gave one to may parents. Look at the pricing now it seems they are more in the low $200 range.

Canon may have been clearing them out in anticipation of the S120.

S120's, the current model, retail for US$449; the only cameras really affected by this decision are the most basic Powershots. If it has a long zoom or a bigger sensor, it'll be well above their ~$200 cutoff.

Even the Ixus 150/Elph 140 has an 8x zoom and OIS, and it sells for less than 100 EUR. That amounts to less than 100 USD, I guess.

If Canon abandons this class of cameras, it will be because the market is simply too crowded, not because it's dying.

Apparently you can get up to a 10x zoom in an Elph- that's a lot of reach in a very small package. Still, that sub-US$200 segment is largely dominated by 1/2.3"-equipped cameras, and that's one thing Canon could really improve upon. Let's see more large-sensor compacts!

Something like the $119 Canon PowerShot SD/ELPH Series 330 HS is a better camera than even the most expensive smart phone. However, a cell phone camera is "good enough" for the masses, and it's something that they're already going to have in their pocket, so why carry a second device if you don't care about better photography than your phone can manage?
