Why can't people read instructions? The American Homebrewers Association web site specifically states that you're not supposed to send entries for the National Homebrew Competition until March 10. The venue hosting the judging for this region has just informed me (yeah, I volunteered to be the coordinator for this region... heh) that they are already receiving entries.

Duh.

Whatsapp is over-valued. I can't phantom someone paying so much money sight unseen. Mark it up there with the AOL deal.

Disqualify them all for failure to follow instructions. They won't deliver early next year.

I'm with Captain Ned. A DQ will show that you're serious. :D

A friend-of-a-friend had a baby this morning, and the new baby girl's name is Shaylee Eevee. Yes, the mother and father are aware that the middle name is a Pokemon. In fact, she said it was intentional.

I think Eevee sounds just fine. It doesn't really stick out, and has a nice ring to it.

You only have to worry when kids are getting named Charizard, Mewtwo, or Pikachu...

Yeah, I guess so, I was just surprised to read that the kid was intentionally named for a Pokemon. Not so much the name itself, which as you said sounds fine. The intent was weird.

I met someone once who said that his first daughter would be called Athena. Ever since I've been keeping my ears open to really nerdy names that actually work, as opposed to names that just inspire all the facepalms.

Quick question, what kinda cable do I need if I want a cable to be in the lightning bolt bit on the side of a macbook on one end and into HDMI on the other?

Is that mini hdmi to hdmi or is it something else?

I hate cables.

Not very helpful if you're still a Kiwi, but it gives you the idea.

Gah, I just don't know what I'm looking for, I think that's the problem. I'm sure apple made a cable like that before… I'll just go into the shop and ask the wee man.

Thanks Ned.

Yes, still in NZ, here for another year at least :)

Just what is the proper collective noun for a horde of 16YO girls infesting your house for a sleepover? The modifier to said noun is that the wife was dragooned into bringing her Mom (MiL to me) to Florida over the weekend so that Mom/MiL can see the houses her eldest children have bought for themselves down there.

I am here. I am defenceless. I am rereading Darkmage's Shutdown Chronicles to glean actionable information.

Anyone got any experience working for or with HCSS Construction Software? They've got entry level jobs open and I'm looking at applying.

Ugh. It must be horrible. Sorry Ned. I can hear the "likes" (as in, every other word is "like") from Virginia.

I got lucky. My daughter is in the theatre clique as a techie, so it's all sci-fi (and not just a little bit of cosplay) around here and this group was part of that crowd. They watched the recently-arrived Blu-Rays of Ender's Game and Gravity, then geeked out on sci-fi & horror movies on Netflix. They finally went down around 5AM, much to the dog's relief. I prepped breakfast around 10 (bacon & potatos) and just waited until they awoke to start making eggs. There's not a whole lot of Valley Girl speak (i.e. the "likes") but I will say that my daughter needs a remote volume control (as my wife and coworkers say about me).

Daughter seems destined to take my path through life in being violently opposed to the "popular for the sake of being popular" clique. Sucks when you're in high school but is far better preparation for the real world than surfing along in the popular world. I will say that given her circle of friends the range of gender pronouns I need know and grok has greatly expanded in the last year or so into places I never knew existed. I won't judge from my side and she tells her friends that I was born with the dinosaurs, won't get in anyone's face, and just need time to assimilate the latest variant. They're all good kids who support each other and I'd never want to get in the middle of that. I went through HS pretty much solo and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Now if I can get her to turn in her fargin' homework on time ...

Sounds like my younger daughter (but without the generational crossover in musical preferences).

It gives us a basis for discussion when I have to go adult on her. At least we have one common point of reference, for which I am Grateful.

my son loves anything shiny--knives, power tools, hand tools, stainless firearms, bullet casings, coins, etc.

Not normally a big deal until he runs wildly at me waving a socket wrench I failed ot put up, and manages to solidly rack me when I try to grab it.

Came in today and just barely ripped them to the Zune. Listening will come in the next few days over travel time. Need to hear it loud and that's just not possible at home most of the time.

In fifty odd years or so, the Cap'n will be able to sell it to some techno-collector and recoup his initial investment...maybe.

The 3/15/14 meeting will be interesting, especially since I'll be the chief presenter. I hope that one day my name will be associated with my father's "impeccable integrity". To do so has been my goal from Day 1.

He never wanted the job and after Mom passing last November he just wanted to retreat. He didn't even need to go to that meeting but he did so to support my sister & I and he reluctantly agreed to an interim term ending 3/15/14. His doing so has made it ever so clear to me that there are, even in our little slice of New England heaven, duties to the larger world that one cannot shuck off just because they become onerous.

Daughter's 64GB Zune was rolled over by the wife's CR-V. Exterior glass was fine, just needed to replace the OLED screen and it's still alive. There's a touching tribute to a member of the Zune team inscribed inside every Zune HD.

Oh, and the Zune kills any Apple product on sound quality.
