Work needs a projector and I''m frustrated

Thu Mar 06, 2014 3:39 pm

OK. We have a conference room. We need a new projector to do display presentations on. The problem is that our maximum screen size is TINY. We've only got about 4-5' vertical space to stay above desk and heads.

They'd like to place the projector about 25' back. We have one that's dying currently and to make it work we have to put it in a really awkward position and we'd ALL like to get away from that...

How do I know what to look for to know if a projector will work for that?

25' is long way back... hold a string tight from the projector location and move it around the screen to see what you might hit... is that far back even feasible. Also further back means larger screen usually on lower cost projectors.

have you looked at any short throw projectors?

not all new egg returns are short throws but ones that claim to do it.

Are you free to move the mounting position? If so, arvald has narrowed down the "short throw" range for you. Move the mount waaaaaay forward so that there is minimal interference from the room, and then tweak the dickens out of the keystone adjustment.

If cabling is a problem, you might need to budget a video-over-ethernet extender as well.

I'm going to see if we can do some repainting/modeling/at least buy a damned screen. It's a rectangular room with not nearly enough outlets and way too many seats for meetings; makes running cabling a nightmare. We can't floor mount an outlet or anything like that. So to avoid stringing wires all over we need to moutn it around the wall somewhere.

Our conference rooms at work use these. They're self-powered, so all you need to run across the ceiling is an extension cord to the projector and an ethernet cable to the receiving unit. If you don't have a suspended ceiling available to hide the wires, maybe try some self-adhesive plastic wire channel.

Ours are mostly ceiling-mounted to keep them out of the way.

Use this for distance: http://www.epson.com/alf_upload/landing ... alculator/

I highly recommend a projector with lens shift so you can change the throw height (without screwing with keystone adjustment) and move the image left/right quite a bit, so you don't need a central mount location:

I have the 8350 (but I use it for HTPC stuff). I personally prefer 3LCD to DLP because I have issues with rainbow RGB breakout due to low speed (2x but even on 4x) DLP color wheel rotation. I don't mind the LCD screen door at all, at least not at 1080P. For business uses I doubt 3LCD for DLP is relevant since images are mostly static. Go with high brightness where possible.

Regarding throw size, you can try putting on a different lens to shrink the output, but why not just ceiling mount it closer to the wall?
