Formula 1 2014

Sun Feb 23, 2014 9:41 am

Just got an e-mail from the F1FRL site and we're ready to go for 2014. Pay lots of attention to those preseason tests as the new engine formula and chassis regs have some teams in serious trouble and not currently worth the points paid to get them.

First race is 16 March in Australia.

For those who may never have been part of this before, it's Fantasy Formula 1 and it's all at www.f1frl.com. I love fantasy leagues where I don't have to lift a finger on the admin side.

Whatever happened last year? The season went out so uneventfully that none of us reported back the results at all. :o

And the Wayback Machine doesn't have the final results. All I (vaguely) know is that I was 2nd in the TR league and somewhere around 120-140 overall.

Well, that should make scoring interesting if it occurs.

I'm back as the honorary whipping boy of the league. All I know is that I hope that Red Bull's pre-season testing form continues long into the season

If Sean on Slicks reads this and there's room lift in the mini league I'd be pleased to join. PM me an invite code, should there be space.

Did I hear correctly that we have an American participating this year.. with, was it Caterham?

Oh, actually, now that I look again, yes, but as a reserve driver (Alexander Rossi) http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/ ... 15393.html

Ah well, as long as Red Bull stays "sucking", and good ole' Button and Hamilton do well, I'm happy :)

1:30 AM EDT Sunday? I'll try to make the start but I'll likely be drooling on the couch by race's end.

Give me the Euro-central F1 schedule of 30 years ago when watching a race meant congregating at the one bar whose owner got F1 somewhere around 7AM Sunday. I will never forget the Prost/Senna/Mansell days.

My earliest memory of really enjoying F1 is Hakkinen winning his first title, definitely wasn't around for the Senna days!

I moved to Burlington, VT after college (1985) and somehow found a bar full of F1 enthusiasts. We'd troop down there every Sunday morning around 7AM, have some drinks, eat some tacos, and just have a great care-free morning with the eternal ribbing between the various driver supporters (thankfully it was within walking distance from my place). I was 21 and it was a far simpler and much more enjoyable time. That place never opened until late afternoons on the average Sunday, but the owner knew he had a ready crowd during F1 season and took proper advantage.

The venue:

Yes, its front wall is a garage door. It's definitely a place for locals. The reviews from 2013 could have been written in 1985.

I just randomly picked something with some interests left. I have not been following testing much and I have no clue what those new names are. Too many nobody's if you were to ask me.

The channel I used to watch doesnt have F1 anymore and the only other one I could get is satellite only so not really an option for me. Sucks but I have bought the official iOS app this year (much more reasonable price for 2014, about 10 USD, used to be 50 or so) so if I cant find any live streams I can at least fall back to that.

I have high hopes for this year, a good mix of new and old drivers, and a total toss-up for the cars with new engines etc. It would be great if some of the old back markers would more competitive.

Where there's a will there's a way. A quick google when Quali is on and I'm sure you'll find a way to watch it

My guess is that Australia will be a very strange race. Some teams aren't even using the full energy recovery systems purely because they're limiting what can go wrong so they can things reliable one thing at a time

I'm sure the engineers are having a great time solving these issues but as viewers I think it'll be strange until we get to Europe

Despite their issues, Red Bull are seemingly very fast still

Thanks mate I'm in the mini, see you in the pits.

I'm in Melbourne so not only can I watch it but I can hear it clear on the other side of the city. I would go watch it in the stands but I'm working at home most of the weekend. Oz GP is never much of a race anyway in my opinion. Looks like they may be tentative this year.

Am I right in thinking theres next to nothing I have to do to manage my team? Just let the wins roll in?

I gambled on Lotus, hopefully without Kimi they'll be competitive...

You get the opportunity to change around your team during the season. I think it's a maximum of 6 changes which includes Constructors, Drivers and Bonuses.

Apart from that, we let them drive and see how little we thought we knew ;P

I think I won the 2008 and 2009 Mini leagues, maybe 2011 but I'm not sure, but ever since I've been on the back foot!

I got 2012 and finished really well in the overall, and probably finished 2nd most other years. It'd be nice if they'd keep the historical data on the site.

Does it behave like what they did with the Sochi Olympics, where you can only watch X minute of it and then it asked you to pay or enter your cable provider info or something?

I just watched replays of the @nd practice and the interesting Qualifying in some pretty heavy rain with Mercedes and Hamilton taking the pole,Red Bull Renault took the second starting position with there new Aussie driver Ricciardo and Mercedes's Rosberg taking the 3rd spot.
If it was not raining Mercedes would have taking the two spot's since it looks like they have there stuff together. Lotus is a total mess with the new configuration for 2014. Actually most teams are still wrapping there heads around the whole new engine configuration going from a 2.1l V8 "ithink" to a 1.6l Turbo V6 "the 1st turbo since they were banned in 88" with a battery and electric motor dealio of some kind that uses braking along with heat from the Turbo to regenerate power. Also the cars have much less rear downforce since the lower wing has been removed along with less front downforce with a smaller front wing. Combine this loss in downforce and the the big increase in torque/power the cars are a handful. Also another change is the DRS gap is bigger allowing faster strait speeds in the permitted areas on each track for OVERTAKING. The F1 people reduced the downforce for safety reasons to lower corner speeds.

I like it much more then last year. It really makes the drivers have to drive that much harder. Also the new power system needs a ton of driver input for regeneration and such that they really have a lot on thier plates now. But it does look like it is goin t o make for more entertaining races. I also love the lower pitched sound from the new v6 engines, it allows you to hear what the engine is doing better compared to the previous high pitched scream from the older v8's and v10's. But a large percentage of fans are missing the noise. But I think it nice to be able to hear the crowd like you can now.

Redbull actually looks good, once they get their reliability issues sorted then they are going to be winning races. I'm happy for Mercedes though, I hope they can keep the pressure on Redbull.

Ricciardo was awesome in the wet. I think he was the only driver in the top 6 on intermediate tyres so getting into 2nd with his first run in the rain with Redbull was brilliant. In the dry though I think Mercedes does have the edge for the moment.

Race is going to be interesting for sure. :)

I have tickets for Silverstone this year but the one depressing thing is that the new 1.6 turbo engines sound horrible (on the TV at least).

I miss the distinctive 18,000rpm wail of the naturally aspirated engines. I know these new powerplants are still supposed to hit 15,000rpm but the torque-curve encourages earlier shifts now, and the turbo muffles the unique exhaust note of previous cars.

Also, goddamn - what a messy start to the season!
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.
