Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet is pretty sweet

Mon Mar 17, 2014 3:10 pm

Anyone else wish they made the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet in a wifi only model?

I just wish they made it in a wifi only model. It has a beautiful 10.1 inch full HD screen that is rated better then the ipad or surface 2 and has a good bit of horsepower under the hood. It also has fantastic battery life and the only bad thing is you can only get one with a cellular provider and it is running Windows RT. But the price is cheap for what you get. A cellular capable hi resolution pad with more cpu and GPU power then the ipad air and the surface 2. All for $499 with 32gb of storage expandable to 64gb with a memory card.

If they made it in WiFi only they could lop a good 50-100$ off the price and I think it would sell like hotcakes. I know I would buy one if it was WiFi only.

If anyone has not seen the new Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet it is definitely worth looking at. Google away and be surprised I know I was.

The OS is just not worth while to me. Windows RT... Other than hitting a better price point what is the value in this over the surface pro 2? For the same money if I wasn't getting a surface pro 2 I could get a Nexus device or a Kindle with WAY better app store. Office is not enough of an incentive.

I'm surprised there is a company outside of Microsoft making a RT tablet. I thought RT was pretty much dead.
No matter how bad the new homepage sucks or how bungled the new management is...

Microsoft own Nokia mobile, 2013 buyout for 5-and-a-bit billion USD.

I think Microsoft may well have murdered Nokia at any rate :(
From the days of the 3210 and the N95 they really have done a Blackberry.

Good hardware. Garbage OS. Terrible pricing.

The Dell Venue 8 Pro, OTOH runs full Windows 8.1. Comes with 32GB with SD slot up to 128GB. 8.1in HD IPS screen. I just bought one for $200. This is astounding value.

Then there is the Kindles - also amazing value. Runs Android. Great screen.

It is hard to recommend the 2520 - or the iPad when you can buy two competing tablets for the price of one.

you're confusing things. the quality of the 2520 is quite a bit different than the venue 8. it's also larger, LTE and more memory.
I'm not saying the dell is a bad buy, it's an ASTOUNDING buy, and anyone that picks an android tablet over one of those is insane in my book, as you well know ( i badly wanted an asus note 8, but they sold out immediately).
the 2520 is a stellar device. WinRT is changing and becoming windows phone 9/RT (who knows what they'll name it). it's not a bad os at all, contrary to what people complain about. Virus free, comes with Office, and a full desktop browser for when you need it. It can do everything android can and more. it's a decent OS by any metric. Footprint is a little large, but that's being shrunk right now.
MS doesn't own nokia yet, and this device has been out for months. it was done well before any purchase.

I think that is a misleading statement. It lacks the apps to do anything android can, it also lacks the apps to do everything full windows can. It also lacks the apps of windows phone.

It is actually missing allot of things. And it has a desktop but not desktop apps outside office, and a web browser.

In general I don't know what its good for. you can get a win 8 tablet that runs office and regular programs for less money.

Windows RT is just ridiculous. How can Microsoft expect developers to write apps for the platform, when the in-house developed Office suite doesn't use the platform? They have Office tablet apps for iOS, but not for their own platform.

The only reason why they have desktop mode on WindowsRT is for Office. So we are basically left with a confused mix of Tablet/Desktop paradigms that is unusable.

It is not like WindowsRT cannot run desktop apps. They just enable code signing checks so only code signed by MS(Office Apps) can run in desktop mode. That's completely idiotic.

And then we have the 8in Baytrail tablets regularly going on sale for $200 and running full Windows. Who even gives a crap about WindowsRT? If you want cheap, you would get a Baytrail/Kindle tablet. If you want pricey, you would get an iPad.

No it doesn't.

WindowsRT != Windows Phone

The Office you see on WindowsRT is not built on the WinRT runtime. All they did was to flip a switch and make an exception to their "no Win32 apps on Windows RT" rule for office apps. So what you're left with is a half-assed touch experience on tablets.

The apps for office you see on phone are written on a completely different app framework. They are built from the ground up for touch. But don't expect that to be ported over to WinRT anytime soon.

I'm only saying that I have Office on my Lumia. About Windows RT, I don't know if it has.

All MS platforms have some form of office on it. What was being said was that the office RT is not a tablet centric design but rather a rush job port of the desktop app.
