DSLR bags

Wed Mar 19, 2014 11:24 am

Hey guys!

So I have a Nikon D5200 I want to be able to tote around with me and was looking for some personal recommendations. I have 2 dedicated bags already and am looking for bags that allow more than just camera parts. Perhaps a messenger bag or something that is business like but has a great little spot to tuck a SLR into it. Camera with attached lens is what I'm aiming for.

Also a back pack for this summer that has space for just the camera and maybe one lens or other peripherals, but mainly keeps a binder and work materials. I love the Osprey back pack designs.

Anyway I anticipate your input.

I've flirted with getting a messanger-style 'man-bag' that could handle my EOS-M mirrorless set and a laptop/tablet like the Surface 2 Pro or a Macbook Air (prefer the Surface for a number of reasons). I've only hesitated because I don't need it right now, but I looked closely at designs from Lowpro and Tenba. Specifically looked at ruggedness, comfort, and waterproofing, and found pricing to range from about $80 to about $250, depending on how far you want to go.

I have a Kata http://www.amazon.com/Kata-DR-466i-Digital-Rucksack-Red/dp/B0035Y6JGM.

It has been used to hold the camera, flash, 2nd lens, macbook pro, diapers, wipes, changing pad, powder, bottle, and change of baby clothes while on vacation travel.

Their backpacks are nice- but I've never really been fond of using a true backpack for mobile photography. I have a cheapo Caselogic sling that I still use (broke the poorly attached waist strap), that has carried a 60D with 15-85 and now a 6D with 24-105L (the L lens is larger by a good margin). I still have room for filter/flash card/battery holders, my 70-300 lens, and a few primes, though it's a tight squeeze.

Looking at Kata's site, I'd be pretty interested in their Orbit 130 messenger-style bag, given that it can be carried like the sling or like a typical shoulder bag, can handle larger lenses, and can handle a laptop or tablet.

I've been pleased with the durability of my Lowepro bags and cases.

I have the same sling. Its very good for a camera. But It doesn't fit much else.

I currently treck with a messenger bag and was hoping to get one of those that works with a dSLR and a better backpack.

there is such a range of products but your personal recommendations are worth allot.

I know Timbuktu has several camera messengers. I don't have one, but I do have two backpacks from them. Both are durable, high quality and pretty nice.

If you have a messenger bag you like already, you may want to look into getting a camera insert for it.

I have a couple Domke bags.

http://www.amazon.com/Domke-701-82S-F-8 ... roduct_top

I picked up this F-802 for a trip where I'll be packing my EP3, 5D, a few lenses for each camera, and my dell venue 11 pro + keyboard. It's a tough canvas, no real padding, so I use a neoprene laptop sleeve to keep the laptop from banging against the lenses. it's roomy enough to keep all this from being too tight a fit.
There's also some loops on the side where you can loop through a lens case if you have some really big lenses and prefer it separate.

The strap is tough, and goes all the way around the bag, so even if you load up you don't have to worry about it ripping off the canvas.

i love my camera bag insert http://www.amazon.com/BBP-DSLR-Camera-Insert-Make/dp/B0047P0QLC/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1395772608&sr=1-2&keywords=camera+bag+insert. it's $20 and i drop in my messenger bag as needed.

i switch between a nice Chrome bag http://www.chromeindustries.com/us/en/bags/messenger-bags which has room for everything and a cheap Israeli Paratrooper bag http://www.amazon.com/Rothco-8127-Israeli-Paratrooper-Bag/dp/B000ICIHDC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395772895&sr=8-1&keywords=israeli+bag when i can go light.

i have found i can do several miles a day with a decent messenger bag plus, unlike a backpack, you can access a messenger bag without taking it off.

Tenba does a nice affordable messenger bag in two sizes with a photo insert. Fits up to a 15" laptop as well.

As far as backpacks, haven't seem much I like, but for more hiking-type, Lowepro has some nice ones now with a side loading compartment for easy camera access. Unfortunately not sure if they have any with a side-loading camera compartment + top loading main compartment that work well for more daily use...

Fun fact, my lens is busted!!! It's time to upgrade/replace that first. I pulled my camera out of my camera bag in DC and was affronted by a dangling barrel(the inner barrel is broken but still slightly attached to the outer barrel). I think its a byproduct of when I dropped it lens first off of a train onto concrete a year ago. It showed lots of damage but the image quality was unaffected... that is until now.

Funny thing was the only gift I asked for my birthday was that yellow camera insert, didn't get it, lol. And my camera broke! Irony is quite entertaining.

Well, this may not be any good for you now, but I just ordered this Tenba camera insert: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001120WQ8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm planning on carrying my camera around with me a lot this summer, so I figured I'd get it a bit more protection than I had, which was just a small CaseLogic carrier. It'll be used in a Timbuk2 Track II backpack (http://www.amazon.com/Timbuk2-Track-II-Laptop-Backpack/dp/B004VD7LW2) and a Timbuk2 HAL backpack (I think mine is the 2011 version, I can't find it anywhere online anymore).

Edit: I picked the Tenba over the previously mentioned BBP insert because of my wants/needs. I wanted to carry my Sony a7 with kit 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, plus a Sigma 21-35mm f/3.5-4.4 and a Zeiss 135mm f/2.8. Each lens is 5-6" long with adapter and about the same in circumference, so I'm hoping it'll be large enough to fit them.
