that is terrible terrible news. If you asked me what the worst thing that could happen to Oculus would be, it'd be this.

Pretty much, I just lost all interest in Oculus.

Dammit. There goes every ounce of want out the door. No way I'm buying one now.

Somewhat surprised it wasn't a pr0n company. C'mon, I know you've thought those naughty thoughts.

Oh well, another Ferrari for The Carmack and wasted tech.

"Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever and change the way we work, play, and communicate."

Well, that sucks, although I'm a little surprised they lasted independently this long. Oh, and the 21-year old cofounders last name is Luckey...hmm, yup.

I don't think Facebook would know what to do with it other than targeted marketing.

Well, the only ray of hope is that the great masses of "bigger numbers are better", ADD suffering, impulse buyers that inhabit the waste land that is facebook will drive the price way down for those of us that want to play with neat tech. I don't have a Facebook account, but I have had the opportunity to talk technology, as part of my day job, with folks inside Facebook. Their product may be.... whatever it is... but they have some insanely amazing technology development going on. You'd be amazed the tech that goes into supporting a billion people posting todays #selfie and then monetizing it.

I thought Facebook was a pr0n company

(Question to Mods: are we allowed to say "pr0n", or is that too anti-family-entertainment..?)

Keep it to that and avoid the links and I'm OK with it. Not like JBI rushed in to edit my post, plus there's a thread in the 'Porch with pr0n in the title that's gone for 72 pages.

My interest just died. There's no way I want an FB-affiliated headset product. I don't trust them not to treat it like a data-gathering portal.

If the technology is awesome and the support is good and someone creates a third-party utility that can strip out every bit of data gathering FB might ever do, then maybe -- maybe -- I'd consider it.

But given the general focus of FB gaming versus conventional gaming, I have zero faith that this will be a product anyone will ever want to buy.

Ask the people evaluating the advertising income potentials compared to the current stock price.

Seriously though I don't think Oculus would've done this if they didn't have to, so I'm amused by the general forum reaction.

I still plan to get one, depending on the competition.

Oculus was a pure VC play. VC investors want to cash out ASAP and when flip-flop boy opened his checkbook, the VCs owning Oculus said: SIGN. And they did. JBI has lived of what I speak.

Either way if the competition was getting there first they were dead in the water IMO.

I haven't kept up enough to know the status of everyones projects, but I can't help but think the other companies were a threat Oculus might not've been well equipped to compete with.

It's still 'wake me up when someone releases something' tech much like all those amazing memory techs people have been talking about in the last three years.

You're completely missing the point. The venture capital money that started Oculus has wanted its payback for some time now and wasn't seeing payback in their preferred time frame. Nothing Oculus has posted implies that the VCs would be repaid anytime soon. When this happens, VCs hammer the company to find a profitable (for the VCs) sell-out. Enter the FB offer, which makes the VCs whole and then some. VCs care squat about the company's prospects after that; if they made money on the VC investment and are out before the company craters, all to the good.

I have no ties to the financial world, so that's a point I will continue to miss. :)

I can only speak of the company in terms of the product they intend to sell.

Not exactly, but close enough I guess. We were essentially a start-up division which was originally funded/owned by a privately held (and family owned) business. Near as I can tell from my location down in the mushroom farm, the original intent was in fact to fully integrate us into the parent company as our product matured; but when control of the mothership passed from father to son, the son decided it was time to cash out. He brought in a couple of "management consultants" who hatched a plan to bundle us together with another division they had recently acquired, then sell us off to a big multi-national.
