Bloody 'ell. New washer delivered at 9AM today from Lowe's. By 1:30PM it had already **** the bed.

On the good side, I got Kubuntu 14.04 LTS installed on the old Lenovo and got Brother network printer drivers to work (been struggling with those for over a year on the daughter's laptop). The washer must be my karmic reward for making progress with Linux.

EDIT: Massive design flaw. Loads run with hot water cause condensation on the underside of the lid, including the area where the lid sensor & latch live. A few minutes with a blow dryer restored the unit to operation. Still, can't & won't put up with that after every load.

Rather expensive system for how much beer it appears to be capable of making (based on the size of the tiny keg pictured in the CNet article). And if you want to have more than one kind of beer on tap you'll still need to spring for extra kegs, which won't come cheap.

They're clearly targeting a specific niche - people who want to dabble in homebrewing, but are severely space-constrained and/or want a machine to do all of the thinking/work for them, and have more disposable income than they know what to do with. I have no idea how large that niche is...

Edit: Hmm... web page says it can deal with up to 9 lbs of grain. That's actually enough to do a full-size (5 gallon) batch of moderate-strength beer, so maybe it can actually do a larger batch than the keg in the CNet picture. Picture on the pre-order page also shows a larger keg.

Edit 2: So if it works as advertised, I'd say it is an interesting (but still rather expensive, even if it can do a full-size batch) piece of gear.

Unexpected pregnancy sucks  I guess there really isn't a 100% form of birth control....time to schedule the big V though, 2 kids is enough!

this'll be our 2nd, but I'm going in for the nut cut in a few weeks. 2 is definitely enough. Hell, maybe my wife'll get her tubes tied too (double protection, plus she hates menstruating). I'd only wanted one kid TBH. I'm 30 this year FFS, I'm too old for another infant.

Take up Dizik's idea of loading the bag of peas in a jockstrap. Keep at least 2 spares in the freezer at all times.

We were originally thinking of two but when the appropriate time came 'round (approx 36 for both of us; our b-days are 24 days apart, same birth year) we both remembered the struggles of bringing #1 into the world and we both said: Meh, not again. Wasn't more than a month before I was having a very bizarre conversation about car insurance with a guy who was cauterizing the cut ends of the vas. Still remember the wisps of smoke rising as he asked me yet another inane question.

Apparently about as simple as they get, if you don't count the complication of being in the passenger seat of a Ford Focus pulled over on the shoulder of a busy expressway!

So...

A few weeks ago I smashed my left big toe with a door. Nothing broken, but now the toenail is pretty messed up. It is still attached at the root, but in the past couple of weeks the rest of the nail has come separated from the nail bed. No pain (at least, not any more... it was pretty painful at first), but it feels really weird when it gets caught on stuff and bends back. I've started putting a Band-Aid around the toe to hold the loose nail down flat.

Most of what I'm finding on the web says to just leave it be, that it'll fall off when it's ready and the new nail has started to come in.

In the meantime, yuck. :-?

From experience, that is true. Let it get air if you can. But yeah, probably pretty gnarly lookin'.

Probably better to use micropore tape rather than the band aid as it is more breathable. That's what I've ended up doing on previous nail smashes.

Sitting here on the porch at Dad's place in Old Bisbee, AZ. Keeping him company for a week and helpng him clean the place up for the summer renters. Last night's TV weather report indicated a dew point of -5F. Yes, a dew point below 0F. Guess I'll be sure to keep hydrated.

EDIT: From the 'Porch (heh) looking out at the mountain that was once the Copper Queen mine. The big hole in the rock was the original entrance and in the early days (1880s/1890s) a refuge for the women & children of Bisbee when the local Apaches raised a ruckus.

Well, it's 20+ degrees cooler here than in Phoenix or Tucson, there's a thriving arts community here, plenty of antiques if that's your thing. Most of all it's a nice place to simply sit on the porch, read a book, and do nothing all day.

One thing to be mindful of here is the altitude. Downtown is 5300' and it's about another 200' up the hill to Dad's over about 1/3 mile. Driving is nigh-impossible (parking is non-existent downtown) and walking up the myriad staircases built into the hills gets a bit taxing if you spend most of your life well below 1000' (like me).
