Consoles that support 21:9 TV's?

Sat Apr 26, 2014 10:06 pm

Shopping for a new TV, and I watch a lot of movies so I'm debating buying a 21:9 TV, and I'm wondering if any of the last-gen or current-gen consoles support 2560x1080 gaming, or is that handled at the developer level on a game-by-game basis? Looking online the replies seem mixed and the various console vendors only specify 1080p as the supported resolution, without further elaboration. I know it's a niche thing, but it would be nice to watch movies and play games and not have the black bars in either scenario.

There are no gaming consoles which can support this resolution output for games. The maximum resolution they can use is still 1080p. Some console games can't even run at 1080p natively due to hardware limitations in latest consoles like Xbox One. Some consoles may be able to support higher res output (like "4k resolution") for non-gaming content such as movies but there is also no movie content currently available for such resolutions, except few "demo" movies for proprietary media players from Sony/Samsung. So you'll have to rely on whatever upconversion and aspect ratio adjustments your future TV may have (it may add black bars at the sides of the image when playing console games or whatever), at least for the next few years.

I know most consoles don't support 1920x1080 natively for gaming, I was just hoping for the aspect ratio support, but thanks for that. Might as well just get a larger 16:9 TV for the price lol

This, or just put up with 16:9. I thought about 21:9 before, but then remembered that for every hour of movies I watch in a letterbox, I watch four hours of regular 16:9 content.

If I was gonna do that I might as well just replace my current monitor with LG's new 34" 21:9 1440p monitor for 500 bucks less than the TV would have cost me lol

Probably gonna end up doing that eventually though anyway

If monitors/TVs in 21:9 become pretty common it should be a simple issue for MS or Sony to patch the console to support it.
I recall the original Xbox was my first console to properly support 16:9.

Where can you find that monitor for 500$ ?? That's what LG sells there 29" 21:9 2560x1080 monitor for.

LG's 34" 34UM95 21:9 beauty running at 3440x1440 is around 1500$ unless you know something I do not, if so please share:)

LG also makes a 34" 34UM65 21:9 monitor that runs at the same resolution as the 29" model 2560x1080 and it costs around 880$.
2600k@4848mhz @1.4v CM Nepton40XL 16gb Ram 2x EVGA GTX770 4gb Classified cards in SLI@1280mhz Stock boost on a GAP67-UD4-B3, SBlaster Z powered by TX-850 PSU pushing a 34" LG 21/9 3440-1440 IPS panel. Pieced together 2.1 sound system

I said 'for 500 bucks less than the TV', not for 500 bucks total. The TV I saw was $2000, and the LG monitor is 1500
