4130 vs 4130T idle power compsumtion

Sat May 10, 2014 1:59 am

Hi Guys,

How much difference is there between these two at idle?
Its for a storage server so 90% of the time, it won't do any work.

My idea is that the power compsumtion is the same, until the 4130 exceeds the clock of the 4130t?

Thanks

For a storage server, would a less expensive Haswell Pentium or Celeron do as well as the Haswell Core i3?

If he wants to encrypt is volumes, the i3 would allow for hardware accelerated encryption otherwise a Pentium or Celeron with ECC would be fine.

From what I can gather from various reviews, the idle power consumption of Haswell processors, even 4770, is extremely low. You can't gain or lose more than a couple of watts picking a "wrong" CPU.

However, there are significant differences between motherboards. If you go looking for reviews, you can find a lot of info, sometimes contradicting (http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/cpu/56005-intel-core-i7-4770k-22nm-haswell/?page=15 ... 23 watts?). Hexus.net, silentpcreview.com and xbitlabs.com seem to be particularly obsessed with power consumption, and hardware.info has a lot of data in one place:

Yeah pretty much, don't buy the T unless you are thermally constrained: fanless, confined space, etc. I think a lot of people psych themselves into paying the same for a slower T model when they don't need to. When it is time for it to actually do work, you'd rather it be able to ramp up high and get the job done faster.
(sometimes this design approach can actually save power because it can race back to idle even sooner, but anyways...)

Going by what I've seen and other people have shared on various forums, the idle difference between T and non-T is like the variance between cpus of the same model, aka practically margin of error.

Overall Ivy and Haswell idle very well, even my S2011 gamebox w/ 130W TDP Ivy-E is chilly just reading email or whatever.
I did buy an i3 3220T for a fanless router and looking back I don't even think it was needed there, if I built another one today it would get a standard i3.

And yeah, some motherboards seem to suck power needlessly, can be improper bios settings (users or OEMs), careless design, crappy VRMs or ???
Rule of thumb is the less bling addons it has the more likely it doesn't waste power, but plenty of exceptions on both ends.

With all these "services" that you want to run, will your system be as idle as you want to believe?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

My experience with the T and S suffixed chips is that they're binned for the lowest voltages, but the difference between a low-voltage and high-voltage binning is pretty small anyway. At idle it's going to make so little difference that you probably won't even be able to measure the difference within the margin of error using a kill-a-watt meter. Under load it'll use less power because it's running slower - meaning it'll have to run the load for longer - and ends up being pretty much the same total energy used.

The only reason these chips exist is to fit into cramped appliances and cases where there's not enough airflow or physical space to fit a 55W cooling solution. You pay a premium for that priviledge and you're unlikely to need it.
As others have said, you can get away with a super-cheap celeron for storage/file-sharing duty. Spend the money on a decent motherboard.

Sounds good, it seems I'm not totally wrong in my guesses :)

i´ve bought a Z87-K motherboard. Do you think that motherboard will be okay comsumption wise?

Do you need all seven slots on that ATX motherboard? Would a four-slot micro-ATX motherboard or a single-slot mini-ITX motherboard have worked just as well?

I had one in spare, i never got used, as i got 3770K Cpu very cheap, so i went lga1155, and waited for the "big upgrade" to the X99 chipset og DDR4 Ram is released.

I'm thinking off selling it, and buy a M-ATX og ITX. but not many of them have 6 sata ports and raid controller with a reasonable price tag.
i prefer asus :)
