I am traveling to South Korea in exactly one week, and due to some monitor accidents, I plan on acquiring a 27 inch pls qnix from the Yongsan Electronics market. I will take Korean Airlines with the A380 economy class, and I'm wondering if I could bring the monitor in its case as a carry on? Will it violate any restrictions, or are their any ways around it? Also, should I bring it back untested, especially since I will probably be unable to gain access to a dvi d equipped computer during my vacation. Tank you.


Also, any tips on the best 240-260 dollar ips monitor with 1440p resolution in the Yongsan Electronics market? Can I use a korean non active plug converter for the screen?Thank you.


P.S.: I have Korean relatives who can help me haggle. I also have a very limited korean speaking ability.

Contact the airline. They're the authoritative source as to what you can bring on the airplane.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get one of their representatives on the line in my free time due to too many callers. Does anyone have a similar situation or knowledge about Korean Airline's current restrictions? Thank you in advanced.

According to the specs that I can see online, weight is not an issue. Your problem is dimensions. I can't see the package dimensions so I don't know if it will exceed the standard allowances of hand carry luggage. Failing that, you have to look up the "free" allowable dimensions for it to be checked in. I don't think a 27" monitor will have a box whose dimensions exceed the usual allowable for checked in luggage. Worst case you get to label that as "oversized" luggage and they just charge you money for it.

When bringing the product back, together with all the gifts/souvenirs that you are bringing back, you have the standard tax-free allowance. Exceeding that it should just a matter of paying taxes. Now if your other stuff contains food/fruits, that will be a completely different story with lots of traps and gotchas.

That said, confirm again just to be sure, but try to find out the monitor's package dimensions.

Checked in baggage is almost a no-no. Does anyone have suggestions for taking the monitor back with me to San Diego without having it shatter into little pieces? (Or is checked baggage actually not that bad...)


From their website, I can see the weight will be no problem. The main issue is the dimensions, and while the case looks not too bulky, I am rather paranoid due to the lack of box dimensions.


FYI: You can now search 'korean airlines baggage restrictions' in google and click on the second result. No actual baggage dimensions, just weight.

P.S.: Can anyone recommend alternate monitors in the quoted price range? The Ebay prices are actually inflated compared to the Korean prices bout 50 to 80 dollars.


Wait, I searched 'qnix qx2710 box dimensions' in google images. I cannot find the actual dimensions, but does it look like it can fit in the overhead compartments? I really need this information. Pretty please?

I still have the shipping box from my Qnix Evolution 2 SE monitor. This is not the retail box, but an extra cardboard box that contained the retail box to protect it in shipping. I don't have the retail box anymore (I used it to mail a large book).

Anyhow, the shipping box measures 28" x 20.5" x 6". The retail box will be slightly smaller, but not much. It fit fairly tightly into the shipping box.


Edit: You know you can just buy these things on ebay, right? I got mine for $289 shipped.

YES!!! Thank you, kind sir. I believe the check in restriction is 158 cm per box, so I should be set. Do you think that I should ask my relatives for some extra packaging? My aunt probably has a heck lot of boxes from her other business.


Also, should I get a passive converter for the US to SK plug sizes? I only have an old active converter that I am extremely scared to turn on.

The prices on ebay are massively inflated. Since I need to visit south korea, I decided to get one of those for about about 200 dollars, give or take 20-40 US dollars.

If you're carrying it on it will probably be okay without extra packaging, though if you're concerned about the box getting roughed up an extra layer of cardboard might not be a bad idea.

The power brick I got just takes the same kind of 3-prong power cable that PC power supplies use. It included a Korean cable and an adapter, but I just tossed them and used a standard American cable from my drawer full of cables.


As for ebay prices, when you factor in the "free" shipping from Korea to the US (sellers eat that cost), it's probably not as inflated as it seems. Still, if you can carry it with you, you might as well save that money.

Yes, it should have dual-link DVI.

You're probably screwed, that's 54.5", and the limit is 45 inches.

Also important, there are specific maximums in each dimension -- 55 x 40 x 20 cm maximum in the three dimensions, and at 28" long the box is waaaay too long.

Well darn... I actually don't want to buy it off of ebay due to some previous experiences. How much would the overcharge be?


Wait a minute, I want to bring it through as a checked item. I think the restriction is 155 cm for the checked baggage. 54.5 times 2.54 is 138.43. Should fit.

When I was flying in the US, the airline didn't allow computer equipment/electronics to be checked. Looks to be the same with Korean Air.

"Fragile items such as pottery, electronic products, glassware, frames, etc.; perishable items such as food; and liquids (including gels) food, perishables and other items with foul odor are not allowed in checked baggage."

I guess you could probably take a chance and get away with it, but I second/third/fourth whatever the other suggestions to just eat the slight extra expense of buying from ebay. Chances are they have a return policy too...

If you check it I'd definitely recommend putting some extra packaging around it or putting it in a hard shell piece of luggage.

You can also get these monitors off of Amazon.com if that works better for you, but it's probably just the same people selling the same stuff through a different marketplace.


Edit: What about just shipping it to yourself from Korea? If you're going to have to pay a fee for extra baggage anyway (if they even let you take it on the plane), just mailing it might not be that much more expensive.

Hmm... If I can't get a monitor, what other computer upgrade should I get? Should I just get a good 512 gb ssd to replace the 256 gb ssd in my work laptop?


Or should I replace the fx 6300 and the mobo? Is the pentium unlocked and z97-z87 possible under 240 dollars now at the yongsan market? Or is it a better idea to get a low end i5 and a non z series motherboard?

I think the OP is trying too hard to make his return trip difficult.

Any 27" monitor is NOT going to be small enough to meet carryon limits. And many (if not all) airlines will not allow electronics to be checked.

Don't do it. Do yourself a huge favor and just buy it domestically and enjoy your time with friends/family without the worry.

Is it really worth the effort? These monitors are now what? $350 on eBay shipped to the US? So at the very best you are saving probably $100 of the price. If they say you have to check in and then charge you for the checkin, even that price advantage goes away. Additionally, if you have to buy a 110v to 220v converter, you are probably paying more. Also, customs.

To me, that $100 is totally worth not having to lug this thing around on two flights over some 15 - 20 hours. Just save yourself the burden. Long haul flights are already a horrible experience.

I decided to not buy a monitor from Yongsan. I found a hdmi equipped panel with a vesa mount for 320, but I found out that none of the monitors there, except for some name brands such as lg, are free voltage. I decided to just get the heck out of there, and I am settling on getting the asus pb278q in the united states. That warranty and awesome stand look to be worth it. Thank you all for the help.
