If productivity > gaming, consider a triple portrait setup. It sounds like you already have one sensibly-sized IPS panel, and at 1200 or 1080p they're significantly cheaper than the higher-resolution option.

I mention the triple-monitor setup because of your limited focal range; As JAE mentions, multiple screens can be "curved" around your head keeping more of the desktop area at the same focal distance, and 3x1080p is usually similar in price to a single 2560 screen of similar quality. I prefer to work (and game) with an odd number of screens rather than even, because then you have a screen, rather than a pair of bezels in the middle of your vision which avoids neck strain. YMMV, of course, but none of us are spring chickens anymore!
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

A few things:
1) It was me, not JAE (the other guy whose nick makes a nice TLA...)
2) I'm not *sure* Ned has the same sort of vision issues I do; but he's (approximately) my age so I mentioned it as a possibility.
3) Yeah, I should've mentioned the triple-portrait option! (But if you watch a lot of videos on the PC this is rather non-optimal...)

Oh yeah, I've got the whole age-related close focus problem. For book distance I don't wear glasses or contacts. My glasses are distance-biased, so close work with them hurts my eyes. My contacts are multi-focals and better at close work, but I really should grab a set of reading glasses/computer glasses for when I wear the contacts.

Dual-head would be plenty enough for me. The Newegg blurb for the Asus I picked says that it's a "corporate" model and Asus promises to sell the exact same beastie for at least 12 months. That said, I have no idea if we're in month 6 or 18. A triple-head setup and SWMBO would be sure that I'd taken leave of my senses.

I would hold on to the 8800 GTS until GM204 cards launch at least.

750ti is a nice little card but will not last the test of time in the same way your g80 card did.

Seconded; if you can hold out for a while, you might as well keep using what you've got. I also highly recommend a dual-screen setup for productivity. Now that I've been using one at work for some time, I almost feel handicapped with my single monitor at home.

Yes, dual-head is a great productivity tool. I am currently without a second monitor at home since one of them died recently; if not for Linux's virtual desktops feature I would've replaced the failed display already.

Nonsense! The GeForce GTX750Ti is just $140 -10MIR. Send the ancient GeForce 8800 GTS along with the other ancient hardware.

8800 GTS cards were part of the swag Damage had to give away at last year's BBQ.

Looks like a good plan, hitting it right in the sweet spot. The size of the SSD is perhaps a little big - unless you have a specific need for it? Otherwise a smaller drive possibly in conjunction with a 4770K might be better future proofing. I expect SSDs will continue their drop in price/GB over the coming years but CPU price/performance seems to have heavily stagnated.

Right now at Newegg that SSD is $310 for 480GB, or $0.646/GB. Can't pass up that price. As for waiting for newer SSDs, OS and programs are currently on an old Samsung 500GB drive so anything would be an improvement. Would like to see the Devils Canyon chips hit retail and I initially specced a 4770K so will probably go with the 4790K. An extra $100 to gain 4 more threads seems to me to be a good deal.

Sandisk went off sale and Crucial MX100 512GB pencilled in.

Newegg is trying to clear out some of the older chips now. They jacked up the regularly-$330 Core i7-4770K with a fake $350 price tag, then they "discounted" it to $315--saving you an actual $15 and an imaginary $20.

Maybe you should add a Micro Center store to the itinerary for your cross-country journey to/from the BBQ.

Hmm, the one east of Cleveland is, if not directly on my route, no more than a 5-10 mile detour.

At my age I can freeze salesgeeks with a mere glance (the angry glare over the top of the glasses works every time up to about age 35-40 or so). They never even knew that they were looking for droids. Comes with having a teenage daughter.

Will be my first-ever MC trip and I'm sure the CC will take a bit of bending. I had hoped to have this done before BBQ so I could be a supplier in the swap meet, but if the prices work I'll just show off the shiny new boxes.

How bad is OH sales tax going to whack me?

Ahh, Micro Center. They're not exactly on my way home from work like the TigerDirect is, but it only adds about a half hour to the drive so it is certainly doable. Been there a few times in the past year (generally when on my way to/from something else in that general direction). There's a Fry's not too far from here too. Mmmm, the advantages of living in a major metro area...

Sometimes I don't realize that I'm spoiled to have both a Frys and a Microcenter within 10 miles

How did it go? Have you collected all of the components that you want?

Picked up the barebones at a suburban Cleveland Micro Center on my way back home from the BBQ. Ignoring sales tax, I got an i7 4790K/Asus Z97-A/Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x8GB for the price of the same at Newegg, but with a i5 4690K. Given the hotel bills accruing from BBQ travel, I'll need to delay the rest of the purchases into subsequent card billing cycles.
