Gaming pc for $1300 and under.

Wed Jun 11, 2014 9:09 pm

Hello.

1.CPU - Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard - MSI Gaming 3 or 5 (because of Killer ethernet and such)
Video card - Any remake of the gtx 780 (because the ti is damn expensive T_T), preferrably overclocked, for example ASUS and MSI ones.

2. Gaming and more gaming, only significant thing i use it for.

3. $1300 (that includes windows 7, win8 can burn in hell).

4. Latvia, but i can ship from US and UK if needed. Newegg.com

5. This is gonna be my first build, i'm excited and nervous, i've done some research, but it's all still up in the air. I'd love for the pc to run bf4,crysis 3 at maxed out settings on great fps and be upgradeable, SLI etc. Also would be nice if you could recommend a cool looking pc case aswell, not the default and boring ones.

That is a great start. Now you need at least 8GB RAM, a 120-256GB SSD, very good monitor (at least 27"), DVD-RW......
Omen by HP Desktop: Core i5-7400, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1050, 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD

I prefer Asus/Gigabyte motherboards myself, but that one should do fine. Stay away from the Kingston V300 series as they switched the NAND type to garbage. If you're buying a mechanical HDD for storage, you're gonna want more than 1TB. I'd go with like a 3TB WD Green for $108. If you live near a Microcenter, you can get that CPU + Motherboard combo for $309, which would save you almost $100. The rest of it looks okay.

Edit: My bad, it looks like Microcenter's combo is actually, on the 4670K, not the 4690. But you could go up to an i7 and still save some money :P

That's probably the SSD to go for.

Your chosen power supply is overkill. Aim for 650-ish and get a better quality. Just my opinon here, but a power supply is one of the last things you should skimp on. I look to spend just over $100 USD on power supplies and try to get a 80+ gold. If you need to save money, buy an AMD 290 to make up the difference.

Welcome to TR, by the way. Have you looked at the System Guide yet?

But before we recommend components, what it your monitor's resolution? The 780 is a great card, yes, but it is complete overkill if you only have a 1080p monitor.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

Even games today can stress a 780 at 1080p. Going forward it will only get worse.

However if he needs a monitor dropping to a 4GB GTX770 wouldn't be the end of the world. I wouldn't get a GPU with <3GB these days.

But what if he's looking to "future proof?" To which I'd say, "Get a $200 card now and a $200 card in a few years when your card needs upgrading." OK, I'll stop talking to myself. Agreed, superjawes, important to know.

BenQ XL2720Z 1080 p yup. Going to get it because of the 144hz it has and the fast response time + contrast.

And yes, yesterday looked at the system guide video :P

I suppose it depends on what your target framerate is, but....I'd say the GTX780 wouldn't break a sweat at 1080p. (notice all games in that article are benchmarked at 1440p) You're looking at well over 60fps @ 1080p with High settings on Crysis3, which is one of the more punishing games out right now.

That's my credo also. $250 is my absolute max (aka, half the price of a GTX780), especially for 1080p.

Good choice. I have the XL2420T, 24" 2012 120hz model.

144hz, black equalizer, and low blue light will help you play at the highest possible fluidity with low eye strain.

Staying at 1080p is a good choice for a 780, and not complete overkill by any means as far as 144hz goes.

The only thing I MIGHT recommend is waiting for some GSYNC monitors. They are going to be out soon enough. If you can get by with whatever monitor you currently have, you might be very happy to have waited for GSYNC.

But either way, 144hz will blow you away. It is an excellent choice from a competitive FPS gamer's perspective.

As long as you're not editing photos or videos professionally on that screen, you'll be good 8) .

That's been my philosophy for many years now. When it comes to GPUs, the more you spend, the more you lose. More frequent upgrades also means faster access to new tech. Of course, if he doesn't want to touch it for several years (or has a 1440p monitor) then he's gotta go high-end.

You should get Windows 8.1.

Just get ClassicShell, Start8, or StartisBack to get your Windows 7-style start menu back and disable the "metro" apps as default programs for images, videos, music, etc.

It is much better than Win 7 under the hood and you will benefit by better multithreaded performance that is already apparent in games like Battlefield 4.

I run vanilla Win 8.1, and while I have complaints, they are pretty trivial. The latest update lets me hit WinKey > Shutdown Settings, and the next update should bring back the Start Menu and put the Modern UI apps in windows, IIRC. In the mentime, I just make sure that I'm using the non-MUI version.

So like I said, the complaints are trivial, and for that minor trouble I get performance increases. If someone already has a 7 license, I see no need to upgrade to 8.1, but I also see no reason for getting a new 7 license over 8.1.

Not really...if a game isn't running well @ 1080p on a 780, chances are the game is the problem, not the GPU.

That VRAM is more useful for denser textures (meaning higher resolutions). It isn't going to be as useful at 1080p.

A GTX 760 is perfectly suited for 1080p gaming, and that will save you about $230 (if you go with the one linked in the System Guide). You could put that cash aside for later and upgrade your entire visual setup with higher resolution and/or GSync monitor later paired with a beefier card.

What kind of a power supply would i need for the 760 and 780 for it to not be a huge overkill ? And if i get the 760 and then want to upgrade it to a 780 for example, would it be better to leave the 760 and just sli them together ? or is that only good if they're the same type of card?

You can't SLI a 760 and a 780. They have to be the same GPU.

780 and 780
760 and 760
680 and 680

Would still get a 4GB 760. I have a 2GB 670 and in some games I can tell it's not enough at 1080p. And in the next year you're going to want 3+GB for sure. That's why I'll be swapping in the 7950 from my secondary rig shortly.

The R9 280 is the best value card right now IMO.

Btw how good are amd processors compared to intel's ? bang for the buck etc.

All their products are like mercedes cars to me, i see some numbers and letters, that don't make any freakin sense some processors FX 3094, seems like they just don't like naming things like intel and nvidia does.

and same with video cards ofc, nvidia is easy to understand and then you get to radeon... which has the weirdest names ever.

TR Guide suggests Corsair HX650. http://techreport.com/review/26463/tr-m ... em-guide/7

650w PSU should do a ~350wGPU no problem. The idea isn't to get another of the same GPU later, but in 2 years newer GPU's will be out that out preform the 760 by a handy margin and would cost about the same and allow you to keep gaming at 1080p with whatever eye-candy-filled games will be released.

I wouldn't go AMD for gaming. If you are on an extreme budget, then maybe. But even then, the upcoming Pentium "aniversery edition" chip is what you'd want. Dollar for dollar, they keep up until you hit the i3. Once you get to i5 levels of performance they can't do it at all without consuming stupid ammounts of power. But through out the comparissons the AMD ones will suck up more watts by far.

AMD CPUs are just bad, not to mention the AM3+ platform that the FX series needs is completely ancient. Stick with Intel.

AMD GPUs are another story. Like I said, the R9 280 is a great buy even given its age (it's a 7950).

Don't buy an AMD processor. They run hotter and are generally less powerful than Intel processors. The video cards are good and provide a good rivalry between Radeon and GeForce. (This is probably because AMD graphics was ATI before.)

You can only put two cards in SLI (or Crossfire for AMD cards) if they are the same. Two 760's, 770, 780's, etc. However, we almost never recommend SLI/Crossfire here because you aren't going to double your performance, and such setups are going to draw more power and run hotter than just getting a single, faster card.

On power supplies, I will need sometone to link to the PSU calculator because I don't have it bookmarked on this computer...you can probably go ahead and crunch the numbers for a 780 Ti to have enough overhead. Extra watts won't cost that much. The big thing to look for is making sure that you get the right number of PCIe power connectors for the upgrad card.

Side note: Be sure to sanity check all of the recommendations here. Most of us are in the US, and I personally don't know if you're going to get hit with local fees and taxes. The prices could also be different. Demand for Radeon cards drove up prices here in the US for several months, but Europe and Australia were unaffected.

Thanks buddy. The fees only apply if i ship from the distributor right to Europe (in most cases), but if i get a 3rd party like viabox i have to pay like $40 for them to ship it to me without any taxes, as a gift basically, although Latvia doesn't really tax anything, not that i'm aware of, only EU does.

And everything in the EU is basically your prices x2 sadly... :/ Same thing for cars, you're incredibly lucky :D

It's tough to recommend such an expensive graphics card for 1920x1080. How about a $370 Radeon R9-290 4GB card, instead? The AMD Radeon graphics card offers better bang for your buck than the NVidia GeForce graphics card does. A $230 Radeon R9-280 3GB would still be more than fast enough for the low resolution of the monitor that you have selected.

144 Hz

Welcome to TR, by the way. Have you looked at the System Guide yet?

But before we recommend components, what it your monitor's resolution? The 780 is a great card, yes, but it is complete overkill if you only have a 1080p monitor.

BenQ XL2720Z 1080 p yup. Going to get it because of the 144hz it has and the fast response time + contrast.

And yes, yesterday looked at the system guide video :P

But for the money, I would say get a cheap GPU and wait until big Maxwell cards hit late 2014 / early 2015.

Kepler and Hawaii are played out.

Watched a few gameplay videos with the card and well... sadly i heard nothing but bad, it could run everything, but it sooner or later crashed, lagged the game and basically just went nilly willy all over the place, sounds like it has horrible build quality and drivers :/

If i get a gtx 760 will that run everything on ultra ? and get max fps in csgo ? :D

You have been misinformed. It's FUD like that that causes people to overpay for under-performing products that have a popular brand.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is not a very demanding game by modern graphics standards. 1920x1080 is a low resolution by modern graphics standards. Any mid-range graphics card can provide good performance with the combination of those factors. If you want to spend your money on an overpriced graphics card, that is your prerogative--it is your money, but you may be crying when your expensive card is obsolete in 2015. If I were going to spend that much on a graphics card, I definitely would not get anything smaller than a 2560x1440 (WQHD) display.

Er, what videos are you watching? I've heard of some issues with AMD cards, but not game crashing. You might also consider the game. Some titles just aren't coded/ported well, and switching between GPU teams isn't going to fix those issues.

For CS:GO, you should easily be able to play on ultra...that game isn't terribly taxing compared to other games.

And for reference on GTX 760 performance, Check out TR's review. I'd say that you're in really good shape. Those benchmarks are at 1440p and very high settings, and the 760 still holds its own.
