currently using an acer x223w for a few years but it'll be going to a friend to replace his viewsonic 19" crt.

so i'm looking at 27" for gaming/movies/ low latency, IPS? PLS? LED?

how are the Asus?

For me, the best 27" monitor is Dell U2412M for the following reasons: a) it has 1200 vertical resolution; b) it has various aspect ratio; c) it's Dell.

Your old monitor had a 22" 1680x1050 TN LCD panel. The cheap Benq monitor that you linked has a 27" 1920x1080 AMVA LCD panel. Would you consider a 27" 2560x1440 PLS LCD monitor?

Any Korean IPS 1440p.

If gaming is the first priority, does that override price?

BenQ XL2720Z is decently reviewed at TFTCentral but it's way over budget ($450), Dell P2714H gets closer in price but isn't quite as good for gaming (although input lag is still excellent), plus it's PLS...

The BenQ GW2750HM is pretty old but reviewed well when it was new, you'd have to do a little comparing on your own to check vs newer models. Ditto for the Asus VE278Q-- although with 1 frame of additional input lag (~16.6ms) compared to almost zero additional input lag on the two newer models and 6ms on the XL2720Z, I might skip the VE278Q.

Amen to that - I love monitors with high vertical resolution, and I totally love my Dell U2410.

@the OP:

• For low latency (gaming/movies), skip IPS and look at TN panels - they have great grey-to-grey response time.
• Likewise, go for a 16:9 aspect ratio (unlike Kreshna and me who've opted for taller 16:10) since they're better aligned with movies.
• If you can stretch your budget towards USD 500, then opt for the 2560 x 1440 resolution. That will give a finer dot pitch than 1920 x 1080 (which will not look great spread over 27 inches). However, also base this decision on how much you watch movies, and how much gaming. Driving a 2560 x 1440 for gaming at the native resolution will stress your graphics card. That's a 24 inch monitor. I've never been able to find a 1920x1200 monitor that isn't 24 inches.

I have one of those, and I like it. I wouldn't bet that the "Perfect Pixel" guarantee is worth the electrons it's printed on though. That said, a dead pixel is hardly visible on one of these monitors.


I'm still waiting ever so patiently for Asus to release that 27" 1440p Gsync monitor. I really wish they'd hurry up and take my money.

Everyone who sees my screens at home is usually awestruck and assumes I spent a couple of thousand on them, because they're used to using a 1080p wishy-washy TN with their faded colours and flaky angle-dependent gamma.

For £450 those screens have become one of the best PC investments I've ever made.

Have you considered Viewsonic's VX2770Smh-LED?

It's 1080p, has an HDMI input, very nice quality screen. I've been using one for about a year now, I guess, and it's been great.

I'm kicking around the idea of getting a higher resolution screen (one of the 1440p panels). I keep going back to the Asus PB278Q as a good option, or Dell's U2713HM. Actually, I really like the U2713H, but I don't know that I want to spend quite that much.

If you haven't seen it already, PC Hardware Help maintains an up-to-date list of monitors that use IPS / IPS-type panels which I've found very helpful.

thx for the link, price point is still manageable but what's with the backlight bleeding from the reviews on amazon?

You're not going to find the cheapest Korean imports in your local store. Buy from the Amazon vendor that's Prime-eligible (fulfilled by Amazon), and you'll have a reasonable return path if you're unsatisfied. Dell's monitor warranty is better, but you'd spend twice as much to get an UltraSharp U2713HM.

If you have a local Microcenter you can pick up a Korean monitor for good prices. They have the
AURIA EQ278CG 27" 1920 x 1080 for $430 and the Auria EQ278C 2880 x 1620 for $630.

I know this is 24" instead of 27, but for the money it's the best value you can get a 144hz gaming monitor.

BenQ also has some nice 144hz screens for gaming, 24 and 27 inch, but they are a bit more expensive. They have some useful features for multiplayer FPS, like Black Equalizer to boost gamma at the cost of colour accuracy, allowing you to see opponents hiding in dark corners easily. I like to call it my camper radar

I have an XL2420T from 2 years ago and it is very nice for competitive FPS. 120hz is silky smooth awesomeness.

BenQ XL2420Z 144Hz 24" 1080p $369 (same panel as the $279 XL2411Z, but with a more "1337" looking monitor stand, S-switch for navigating the OSD, more inputs, and blue light reduction to reduce eye strain. Not sure if it justifies the extra $90 for just a different aesthetic and a couple of extra inputs when all of the other features are available on the 11Z)

I can recommend the Monoprice Zero-G 27" 2560x1440 (16x9) IPS monitor:

It's one of the Korean monitors (I think). I paid $330 for mine from Rakuten.com. I've seen it as low as $270. My biggest complaint is that it takes 15-20 seconds to wake up from sleep. It does have a glossy (not matte) screen, but the coating makes it bearable. Very happy with it. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I haven't noticed any ghosting. Text is razor sharp, and after using Microsoft's built-in (software) color calibration the colors are very good (calibration was a bit of a pain due to the clunky controls, but it's been set and forget so I don't care). Be aware its inputs are limited, so you've got to have dual-link DVI to take advantage of the full resolution, and it comes with a very short (2-3 foot?) cable. 16x10 ratio would have been preferable, but I could only find that in 24 & 30" monitors, and 27" is the sweet spot for me. Monoprice has a few other 27" IPS monitors, and they sell them at heavy discounts all the time through Rakuten.com. I don't have any experience with those, though.

There was an Acer on sale from Newegg recently that had similar specs but lots of inputs if you're looking for a major brand.
