RHEL 7 Release

Tue Jun 10, 2014 9:47 am

I know there aren't many RedHat users here, but I thought I would post this. http://www.redhat.com/about/news/press- ... ils-rhel-7

I've played around with the RHEL7 beta for a few minutes, and it's pretty nice. Gnome 3 is, mostly, under control, and the better AD integration looks interesting.

It's been a LONG time since I've used RH or even Fedora, but for running an enterprise server RHEL is still the gold standard.
Of course, CentOS is there for those of us who don't care about trifling things like "support".

Speaking of which, is there an ETA on the CentOS equivalent?

CentOS 7 is still working its way through the build process according to the CentOS website. (http://seven.centos.org/)

I'm ready for CentOS 7 to be released, so I can do my own personal testing.

I've been thinking of working towards an RHSA but the news of RHEL7 and all of the major improvements gave me reason to pause. To me, this release is much more exciting than the RHEL5 ro RHEL6 release.

What really stuck out to me was switching to XFS as the default file system. There are performance considerations that should be taken into account with this change.

Does XFS do any kind of block-level checksums like ZFS or BTRFS? Putting a journal on an SSD with the OS would be really cool, but without checksums I'd still worry about data in a critical application because a RAID cannot protect from that. Interesting info on the write-back cache.

RHEL6 was awesome for the tickless kernel, and RHEL5 was rather long in the tooth at that time. The tickless kernel matters more in virtualization then on bare metal, and I virtualize a lot of stuff.

No. XFS is an old school filesystem, as much as that can be said about a journaled file system.

RedHat really wanted a filesystem that would support sizes above what ext4 supports.

I grabbed the CentOS 7-everything release last night via torrent. I'll spin up some VMs tonight when I get home, see what's new :) I'm pretty excited for this release. New shiny things!

Ahh, I missed this thread when it originally started (was out of town that week with limited 'net access). I'll add CentOS to my long list of "I should check that out" things. Been a few years since I messed with Red Hat or Fedora.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I work with RHEL5 and 6 regularly doing security audits. In the enterprise environment they are as good as I have come across.
