The CPU bottleneck

Thu Jul 10, 2014 3:36 pm

Since i got this CPU there has been this annoying bottleneck which has now gotten to me finally
I have BF4 and BF3, play a lot more BF3 than BF4
BF3 always has this annoying drops in long views where a lot is going on it drops fps to a steady 37-50
My avg is less than 60 no doubt
I had come to a conclusion that it was my ram i have 1 stick of Hyper X 8gb so its single channel i have overclocked it to 1900mhz frm 1600mhz
there were some gains but not enough im wondering if not having dual channel is hurting my performance sooo much

on the other had BF4 also had such situations but not as bad and since MANTLE came i have had no drops in fps constant 60+ at most times some times dips below that very rarely

My CPU is running at 4.3GHZ 18x240 1.325v
Ram at 1900mhz @ 1.6v
the BF series is the only one that has this horrible bottleneck going on other games are mostly fine

So is it my RAM or something else?

You're starving your CPU. Yes, buy another stick.

Yes, dual-channel's what you need. The FX-8350 loves memory bandwidth, and it takes a lot to reliably feed all those cores. Grab another 8 gig stick, run your memory at stock speeds to start, and experiment to see if the second stick can be pushed as far as the first.

I was expecting this to be about a grossly underpowered CPU holding back a graphics card. Like the Smithfield Pentium D that's trying to feed a Geforce GTX 750 Ti at my house. *cough* Don't look at me like that.

The FX benefits from core parking (apparently) and overclocking.

BF3 and BF4 rely on high IPC for at least the primary threads; a high-clock i3 does better than a lower-clocked (mobile) i7 because although the engine can benefit from many cores, it's a moot point without at least one of the cores being fast.

Memory first though; like you suspect, overclocking a starved CPU still leaves you with a starved CPU.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

Thread scheduling could also be an issue as the FX-8350 should have it threads allocated like that of an Intel Hyperthreaded chip. The traditional means of treating all logical processors equally is suboptimal due to the resource sharing used in AMD's design.

and additionally:

If by chance you're running Windows 8 or later, those patches have already been included in the system.

i have disabled core parking are u saying im losing performance when i do that Oo please shed some more light here as to how its affecting anything

well since most here also think it is a memory bandwidth issues i will soon pick up another stick hope i find another same one :P

Thread scheduling wont be an issue since im on win 8.1

EDIT: I'D like to add that BF4 has theses dips on DX11 but not a problem in Mantle does the memory bottleneck disappear ?
