new monitor time!

Fri Aug 01, 2014 4:41 pm

Hey all, I've posted a few times before on this forum about a new monitor, and the finances are finally in place for an upgrade (or side-grade).

I'm currently running a dell 2408wfp monitor, which will be sold in a few weeks.

The questions is: 21:9 1080p, 1440p, or a 1080p 144hz monitor? The computer use is 90% gaming/10% everything else. I have a GTX 760 on my computer.

Currently it's between:

Gaming? What gaming? If all you play are MMORPGs, single-player RPGs and/or MOBAs - get any IPS display, model/price don't matter much (you may overclock some of them to a higher refresh rate... or you may not, there is NO guarantee for ANY model). If you mostly play a fast-paced FPS games and want to reduce motion blur - get a 144Hz TN monitor from Asus or Benq, preferably the one that supports http://www.blurbusters.com/zero-motion-blur/lightboost/. If you are willing to go for smaller monitor size - you may also try Eizo Foris FG2421, it's only 24" but it offers the BEST combination of "gaming" and "general use" due to its MVA panel with high native refresh rate and an unbeatable contrast ratio with pretty good color accuracy (no garbage IPS display can match it regardless of price), only problem is very few sellers bother with it due to high defect chance (so ONLY buy it from a reseller where you can easily return it for full refund)

Yeah, I agree with JohnC:
Your GTX760 will be the limiting factor either way as it's likely to struggle at 1440p a little (It'll be *okay*) and it won't get anywhere near a constant 144fps at 1080p unless you really dial back the details.

I'd be loathe to spend money on a 3D gaming/lightboost monitor right now with G-Sync still in its infancy and Freesync models due out by the fall. Waiting is advised.
On the other hand, if you want a Korean IPS screen and have money burning a hole in your pocket, there's no point in waiting because Freesync/GSync and other fancy features are unlikely to be available on the budget Korean stuff first, they'll trickle in from Asus, Acer, LG, Samsung first - and probably with a price-premium for supporting the latest DisplayPort standard.

As a super-generic Korean 1440p user, I've gotten used to medium quality options on my 660 Ti. Looking forward to less compromise when large Maxwell hits.

I mostly play RTS/RPG, with bits of Titanfall/BF4 thrown in. I'm thinking about the korean IPS monitor, because, as you said, my GTX 760 won't be up to ultra level detail at 1440p.

I too, wait for large maxwell.

With that extra info, I can say that while I don't play a ton of RPGs, the RTS games I've played have generally made good use of the extra pixels on my 1440p panel, and my 660 Ti manages RTS at that res quite handily. I've been doing Starcraft II and Company of Heroes 2 at native res and maxed/near maxed settings, and things are smooth and pretty.

Another COH2 player! Yay!

Is the fact that the korea IPS monitor only supports dual-DVI ok? I've been hearing DP is the way to go nowadays.

I've been using the DP input on mine, the Microcenter Auria-branded Korean monitor seems to be one of the better ones, at least as far as inputs. The controller only allows refresh rates up to about 75Hz, though, I think I would probably trade away my native DisplayPort for the ability to config 100Hz+ refreshes, if I could. I can actually set and use up to about 120Hz, but it freaks out a little and has a very regular screen corruption when it's above 75Hz.

And CoH2... Yeah, just started that. I'm still nowhere near good at it, but at least I'm doing better than I did at Planetary Annihilation (I want to be less bad at that so very badly).

The only thing to check with some of the fancy-input Korean Screens is that the scaler and connectivity circuitry can add quite a bit of unnecessary input lag (25ms or so)

If you're not fussed about input lag then this doesn't matter.
If you buy the OSD-less Dual-link DVI then you'll be fine - most graphics cards support Dual-link DVI natively without any adapter shenanigans.

Sweet jesus it is amazing. If I wasn't traveling for work right now, I'd be at home playing. Combining this with the upcoming space sims (elite dangerous, eve valkyrie, star citizen), I AM EXCITE.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened to me....
There's a reason Apple picked that exact LG-Philips IPS panel for their $999 cinema display!
