What a totally ripoff website!

Thu Aug 07, 2014 10:38 am

I was reading PCMag.com when i ran across a text ad right in the middle of the paragraph from memory4less.com. Apparently they're selling the Core i5-3550 for $386. A bit shocked, I checked out the site and searched a few things. Here, see for yourselves:

http://www.memory4less.com/mobile/m4l_p ... 7&maincat=

What kind of online merchant is this??! They're obviously taking advantage of people who don't know a thing about computers! How deplorable!

First time I'm running across this error!

How about posting a screenshot of the site in question?

It appears reviewers on Web of Trust also criticized the website for overpricing stuff: https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/memo ... ontextmenu

The engineering electronics shop in my university's engineering building has been trying to sell a Radeon HD 5450 at $80 for at least a year now. The marketing on the box is also hilarious, since there phrases such as "Gold plated HDMI!", "CrossFireX compatible!" (oh god the microstutter) and "Overclocked for 7% performance boost!".

Newegg has one listed at $40: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102882

It's memory4less, not cpus4less, so let's check how this works out ...

Is memory4less advertising here on TR? Because I saw this ad for an MSI 970 AM3+ mobo right here at TR, which they're selling for $174 on the spot where they put ads in their articles. Mind you, that's the price after their MIND-NUMBINGLY GENEROUS $30 DISCOUNT. Original price is $204. These guys are really OK with razor-thin margins, huh? 30 bucks right off the bat!! Crazeeeeeee!!!!

And it's a refurb!

Edit: Same board, new in box (not refurb) sells for $75 at both Newegg and TigerDirect. W...T...F...? Almost gotta be a money laundering operation or something, there's no way that can be legit.

Site should be called memory4peoplewithlessbrainsthanmoney

As long as they deliver the advertised product and the buyer is willing to pay their inflated proces, I don't think they are breaking any laws. (Modulo the money laundering option.)

After checking out their page at resellerratings.com it sounds like they do in fact scam customers on a regular basis. 3.17/10 score, and some of the positive reviews read like they were planted by paid shills. Nearly all of the reviews are either 1 star horror stories, or gushingly glowing 5 star reviews. That sets off all kinds of alarm bells, IMO.

Edit: Older reviews seem to be better, perhaps they have gone downhill lately.

M4L is a relic of the 90s, when it was common practice to charge outrageous markups to everyone who didn't know about mail-order discounters. And like most relics, they've built a substantial customer base willing to pay it just because.

It doesn't even come with an Apple logo either.

These prices aren't really any worse than some of the stuff at Best Buy, but it's amazing an online store can get away with it (a better price is only a search away).

Here lies the problem: googling (or binging) "memory for less" brings up, as the first result ... guess what?

And, with all the excess markup they rake in, they can't even get the pics right. This one is hilarious:

Well, the plus side is that they can carry very little inventory BECAUSE HARDLY ANYONE IS GOING TO BUY THINGS.

EDIT: Alexa web traffic tracking: http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/www.memory4less.com

"Bounce rate (percentage of people who visit a page and then leave the website instead of exploring further: 76.6%"

"Daily Pageviews per Visitor: 1.32"

"Daily Time on Site: 1:08"

Aka, looks like most people visit one page and then leave.

Here's Newegg's rankings as a comparison: http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/newegg.com

"Bounce rate: 41.8%"

"Daily Pageviews per Visitor: 5.59"

"Daily Time on Site: 4:49"

(I find it very interesting how a lot more people browse Newegg from school than at home.)

Didn't you read the disclaimer under the image?

The first bullet point in the General Information section of the listing is a bit of a head-scratcher as well:

Umm... what? I guess that's just their way of saying "no returns"?

I would also like to point out that this thread now appears on page 9 of the Google search results for "memory4less". If we keep it going long enough maybe it'll eventually appear on the coveted first page.

JBI, think about how much we're going to boost the Alexa stats by peeking at that site and scratching our heads.

But this is getting mysterious. According to Alexa, the 3rd most common search term that leads poor people to that site is "h87-plus". I googled that and don't get memory4less on the first three pages. The cost of the mobo? Think a refurbished Dark Star with 20% summer rebate and free shipping.
