Printer is possessed. Need a new printer for school, now.

Thu Aug 28, 2014 1:08 am

You heard it... something in my mf-4350d hates my macbook pro, and I need a new printer for school. My budget is 100-300 dollars, and I want the most reliable and widely loved printer available. router-based network-printing would be icing on the cake.

I'm willing to flex my budget a little, but I want a business grade printer that doesn't take up a room which will preferably utilize only black and white toner.

I need one, fast. Thank you.

Just pick one from your budget. You don't need a gazillion page per minute, so any model should do.

I guess it's RIP MF-4350d.

Do you think this'll be adequate:

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-Printer-W ... er+printer

I don't want a more complicated printer. More parts equals more breakage.

Already more complicated than I would have liked. Duplex printing, ethernet and wireless? I am still using the parallel port! :)

All you need is black and white pages right? Go for it, or just hop down to your nearest brick and mortar store and pick one up.

BTW, there is no printing service at school?

There is a printing service, but the process of connecting any computer to their network is a nightmare.

Plus, they require you to install safeconnect, which is spyware, to access the internet. I can thank the new IT head at my school for that, who had a letter of rec from Steve Jobs when he applied at my school in 2012. Former high ranking Apple employee + school wifi = walled garden.

PS: If you're reading this, Mr. Martinez, hello. I'll be expecting to speak with you soon.

Also, thanks for that copy of office 365.

The HL-2280dw is just fine. Scanner quality is horrible and the print quality for graphics is so-so, but get it cheap enough ($100 is definitely cheap enough!) and I wouldn't complain!

Yeah, even laser printers are now quite affordable. With $100, you're going to have a very wide selection. I second Brother, though. I have one at work and it's been pretty reliable. I work it pretty hard.

This.

Work went from a random collection of HP and Okidata dinosaurs to an all Brother shop and it's amazing the lack of '#&%$ printer' in the office now.

I just picked up a Brother 2270 WiFi, Ethernet and USB capable laser printer around 5 months ago for $90
Works fantastic, Still on the toner cartridge that came with it and printed around a ream and a half of paper, also you can purchase high volume cartridges.

When our Epson inkjet printer ink price went from 35-45$ up to 75$ it was a easy choice.

As others have said, get a Brother printer. I bought one about 8 years ago for $110 (an HL-2070n) and it hasn't missed a beat since the day I hooked it up. I got mine at Staples and they sent me a "we miss you - come buy some printer ink, oh wait, you bought a laser print.....never mind" note the other day. $45 every 3 or 4 years for toner. I don't know why people still buy ink jets.

Basic Brother B&W laser. Get one with a duplexer, you'll save more than it costs in paper over the printer's lifetime. If your school's like ours, they don't like wireless printers because of airwave pollution, so get one without or just shut it off.

I've had good luck (sample size of 1, though) so far with Rosewill toner for mine. It was ~$20 cheaper than official Brother toner. Usually Brother toner comes in two "sizes" (physically identical), always buy the larger because you'll save money in the end.

I've been very happy with my HL-2270DW. For 20 bucks more though, that 2280 looks like the same unit with a scanner on top. Even if it isn't the greatest quality, it's still good for digitizing documents and making copies. Unless you already have a scanner, I'd probably spring for the 2280.

Canon MG5522. Its an all in one printer, scanner does both B&W and Color scans and the ones I have done come out beautiful. Ink cartridges are individual colors per cartridge, and it even has a separate Black cartridge for those B&W documents that is larger than the color ones. The printing almost looks like its laser printed (and I used to have both a laser and inkjet printer). It is also a full duplex printer (both sides of the page printing). It supports both wireless and USB connections. And since you are on a Mac, it supports Mac's as well.

  • AirPrint allows you to print directly from your Apple iPhone, iPad or iPod touch wirelessly, while built-in WiFi technology allows you to print and scan wirelessly from virtually anywhere around your house.
  • Canon All-in-One Photo Printer Compatible Operating Systems: Windows XP SP3 x32/Vista/7/8, Mac OS X 10.6.8-10.8
I got mine online at Walmart.com. They have them listed today at $69, and for an extra $5 they also have it listed as part of a bundle that includes a 500 sheet ream of paper and a thumb stick (mine was 8GB) for $74. I thought the bundle was a pretty sweet deal, so thats what I grabbed.

Prior to grabbing this, I was looking at another model Cannon on another web site, and it was listed as the best selling printer they had to offer. The MG5500 line seems to have some different model numbers but all with the same features. In the end, after researching things best I could, I went with Walmart on the price. I have been very happy with this thing. And I have yet to have a paper jam, which is a good thing :)

I ran a computer department for Staples Canada for five years (read: desktops, laptops, repair, cameras, shredders, ink, toner, accessories, etc.). Buy a brother black and white laser. They will actually give you support for the product even when it is out of warranty and the toner is very reasonably priced for the branded ones. As well brother toners have an easy trick to reset them them that takes about two minutes and a screw driver so you can get more toner out of them. (just search on youtube).
