Here's an interesting one..

Thu Aug 28, 2014 9:39 pm

Hey all,
I built a PC for my friend, but it has been blue screening. Runs beautifully most of the time, and the BSODs appear seemingly at random.

What makes this really hard to troubleshoot is the number of different errors we get..

KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (Ntfs.sys)
BAD_POOL_HEADER
NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

I have used Memtest to test the RAM, with no errors.
I've tested the Samsung SSD boot drive using Samsung Magician, and Seatools for both the SSD and the WD Green Data drive. Neither report any issues in any of the tests.

The one thing I haven't tried is a fresh install of Windows 8, however these errors appeared more or less immediately after installing the operating system (it's a legit copy and no extra software installed - with latest drivers).

I'm wondering if it's either..
- The Motherboard (memory controller or SATA controller)
- BIOS settings.

Any suggestions? Thank you!
Rhys

How long was your memtest? A couple of passes do not mean much.

What is the rest of the config?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

Have you noticed any patterns to the BSOD's?

Any add-in cards?

How much RAM, and how many slots populated/available? Your board may not agree with your RAM. I had a strange situation a while back where RAM would test good individually for 24+ hours in memtest (regardless of which dimm), but once two dimms were populated the system would give me all kinds of crashes

Make sure chipset and all other controller drivers are installed from mainboard website's current versions.

Thanks guys..

Yes, I confess I just did the standard 2 pass test (whatever happened by default).

It's a very simple setup..

- i5 CPU
- GA-B85M-D3H Motherboard
- 2x G SKILL F3-1600C11D-16GNT (8GB) - in slots labelled DD3_1 and DD3_2 (the two grey channels / 1st and 3rd along)
- Samsung 830 SSD + WD Green 1TB
- Corsair CX500M PSU

Because my friend has been using the PC, I can't really tell if there is a pattern. I couldn't really find much out with Event Viewer either. But for example, it blue screened yesterday and it was just sitting on the desktop, I hadn't done anything to it in ages.

It does go to sleep / wake up often.

I'm pretty sure drivers are the latest versions; I got them off the internet. I'll try again.

maybe??

also try bumping RAM voltage a little.

Probably not the Windows update as this began happening months ago.

I think we'll start with removing 1 RAM module and seeing if it blue screens, then swapping.. just in case it is a specific RAM module OR if it's having two RAM modules / using the 2nd DIMM.

Try DIMM slots 2 & 4?
Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

Might want to run the ram at one speed step slower too.

Power supply-induced errors can be hard to trace down too.

you can also try running the crash dump through a program called "who crashed".not sure if it will give you any more valid info than you already have but worth a try.

you can also download the windows crash dump debugging tools & symbols if you get desperate.

and if you get really really desperate you could get RAM on the certified list for the motherboard.this typically does not matter (from all the systems I've built)but I have seen one or two cases where the board became crash free once certified Ram was installed. These cases were 100% statistical outliers as that has never typically mattered in the past.

I'm leaning towards the board. Have you got the latest BIOS installed?
