That's an interesting sig. I've got the basics of all my rigs written down somewhere, but it might take up too much space for a sig :P . My first PC was also a 286 (8mhz), but I didn't think they used "SX/DX" monikers until the 386.

I think my favorite was the Athlon 1000. I ran it with Windows Me and was rock solid (believe it or not). Booted in ~20 seconds.

Laptops are another story:
Data General 286 > Dell Inspiron 17" P4 2.8 > Core 2 Duo (XPS16) > i7 Sandybridge (XPS15) > i5 MBA 13" > i5 MBPr 13 (running Win 8.1 natively via Bootcamp)"

And Phones:
LG dumbphone > iPhone 3G > iPhone 4 > iPhone 4S > iPhone 5S > iPhone 6 (yes, probably going to go for it)

Re: Your motherboard that had the most CPU upgrades

Let's see if I can piece this together...

PII 400
P4 1.3
P4 1.7
P4 2.4 laptop (remembering that thing shows how laptops are really good now)
P4 3.0 (my first computer that wasn't a leftover from my dad's computer repair shop)
Nehalem Pentium laptop (I stopped caring much about gaming at this point, and instead tried for better mobility and efficiency)
single-core Atom netbook (speed was actually passable, build quality not so much)
1.5 GHz dual-core Atom netbook
P4 2.6 (epic downgrades FTW! :P )
FX-6300 (I started caring about gaming again)
Nehalem i5 laptop (actually a dual-core, it's some oddball ULV variant)

(I did not remember there were this many Pentium 4s on the list! :o )

The last two coexist now, but for the most part, these have each been my sole computer at some point. I tend to take the lowest-power / cheapest thing that will work, and then optimize the software side until it runs fast (gaming is the only thing I do that intrinsically takes major compute power). Even the P4 2.6, my main system as recently as a year ago, was surprisingly snappy in practice (with some help from an SSD).

I never actually upgraded a CPU. The P4 3.0 and the FX-6300, as the gaming machines of the lot, have been the only ones for which it's really relevant. A significantly faster P4 never did seem like a good value proposition for that system in comparison to keeping the GPU up to date (with new GPUs, it was sort of passable at gaming for years after I moved on - an HD 4650 was the last), and there's not a whole lot to be gained from anything faster within the FX series.

*looks at list again* ... :o

I've had a few motherboards that have gone through 1 upgrade, but my most upgraded motherboard was an AM2 Gigabyte GA-M57SLI.

I took that mother from a 1.8Ghz Athlon 64 to a 2.2Ghz Athlon 64 x2 and finally to a 2.6Ghz quad core Phenom II.

That was my first 'modern' build. Then moved to an a7n8x-e Deluxe. Then a DFI LanParty Ultra 2, then stopped gaming and just used laptops.

I had an MSI Socket 939 board (K8N Neo4 Platinum) that went through a single-core Athlon 64 (Winchester), then an Athlon 64 X2 3800+, then an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ if I remember correctly.

In the Socket 775 days, my Intel BadAxe 2 went through an E6300, and a Q6600, but pretty sure I had to upgrade to a P35 chipset Gigabyte board for my Q9450 and Q9650.

I'm posting this from an old "spare" PC that has been upgraded and rebuilt more times than I can remember:
MSI MS-7125 K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket-939 motherboard with NForce4 Ultra chipset
AMD Opteron 175 dual-core 2.2 GHz CPU
4x1 GiB PC3200 DDR memory
Radeon X1950 Pro graphics card
0.75 TB WD7500AAKS SATA hard-drive
Two IDE DVD burners
3½" floppy diskette
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

My one motherboard that went through the most processors was an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe that had at least half a dozen different socket-A CPUs installed on it at one time or another.

Some AM2+ motbherboard that had a few generations of AMD chips in it. I have an Intel 1155 board now so LOL at upgrading on the blue side. Intel needs to stick with a socket for more than 1.5 generations to make me feel better about my $230 motherboard purchases.

For the most part, I buy on the higher end of CPU's and to see real performance increases I have to wait for new sockets, but there was a short time where I was buying on the lower end and overclocking. I started with an Athlon 64 2800+ in an EPoX EP-8KDA3+. I don't remember if the mobo died on me or what happened but I know I ended up buying an EPoX EP-8NPA which was an oddball because it was an SLI mobo...for socket 754. Anyway I ended up getting a Clawhammer 3700+ from the company that sponsered the BF2 Gaming clan I played with when we topped the charts for TWL.

Looking back at my CPU/Mobo order history from newegg, it looks like I buy a new CPU/Mobo every 2 years... with the exception of my old E8400 which I had for a whopping 4 years.

Overclock that Opteron, I used to run my Opteron 165 at 2.8 ghz all day

For me, that would be my old MSI K7D-Master. I was lucky enough to buy a review board right after the board was released. That board took every bios flash and ran stable with the whole series of MP cpu's. I started off with dual Palamino 1000 MP's (1000 MHz) and finished up with dual Barton 2800+ MP's (2133 MHz).

Edit: however, its shut down now. This Phenom quad core 455 is fast enough and uses half the power.

I've still got an old Tyan Tiger MPX somewhere around here. Started out with dual MP-unlocked Athlon XPs (conductive paint mod) and eventually ended up with dual Barton 2600+ MP. That was my primary desktop for many years.

It was my favorite too as you may recall since you among others helped me with numerous problems over the years. I had a couple SCSI arrays and dual PSU's in that system and with dual CRT's it was pulling in excess of 600W at the wall. I was leaving it on 24/7 because of SETI along with my other rigs. After I built the one in the sig, I shut the whole bunch down. It dropped the monthly power bill about 400 kW-hrs. Also, those PC Power and Cooling PSU's that can put out 40A at 3.3V/5V are mighty scarce. But as far as I know it still works. Got to boot it someday and take off all the data. Hmmm, I suppose that won't be easy.

i think the only motherboard that has seen 2-3 different cpu was probably my good ol' socket 462, cant remember the model, but probably a DFI lanparty with all the bling (duron => athlon => athlon xp) nforce2 chipset ftw.

jeez, you could even get more fps by disabling the onboard sound :)

this thread has brought some good memories...remember pluging the P8 and P9 connectors on the wrong side on an AT psu, and then flicking the switch???

I had an Asus P5N32-e SLI that started with a Netburst Prescott Celeron D 326. I OC'd it from 2.53GHz to 4.13GHz, then I upgraded to a QX6700 as soon as quad core became available. It was only 1 CPU upgrade, but it was huge. a single Core 2 core at 1.6GHz was faster than the Celeron at 4+ GHz.

MSi K7N2-Delta

Nforce 2 Ultra chipset, used an AMD 2600+ Barton, to a 2800+ and eventually got a hold of a 3200+ to cap it out. eventually it got so unstable that there was just no using it. Could have used a recap as that generation of boards for every manufacturer suffered from knock off and cheap electrolytic caps that dry out.

Otherwise that board saw memory upgrades, overclocks and numerous video cards in its AGP slot.

Mine was a Gigabyte AM2+ motherboard that went from an Athlon X2 5050e to an Athlon II X2 250, then ran a Phenom II X3 720 until I bought the AM3+ motherboard that's running an FX-8320 now. I eventually put the 5050e back in and gave it to my mother in law, and it rumbles along cheerfully as her office computer with 4 gigs of DDR2.

edit: Now that I think about it, I owned a Super7 motherboard that must have held a half-dozen CPUs... Off the top of my head, that ran a Pentium 90, a Cyrix 6x86 PR200+, some kind of Winchip I tested for a friend, a Pentium 233 MMX, and a K6-2 400 at various points in its life. Believe me, there was a huge performance differential between those chips...
