P4 3+GHz in SB51G?

Wed Nov 20, 2002 5:22 pm

Has anyone seen any info about running the new 3GHz P4 in a Shuttle SB51G yet? In theory the GE chipset supports it, but what about heat & power?
I'm very tempted to get a SB51G initially kitted out with a P4 2.4B to keep the budget sensible (with 128Mb GF4 Ti4200 & 512Mb PC2700), but it would be nice to know if this is going to be a total dead end or if I'll be able to upgrade to 3GHz+ HT-enabled P4s once the prices start to look more sensible.
Any thoughts?

I had a P4 with HT @ 2.8 Ghz in one of these, if it counts for anything. It just died last year. Heat definitely wouldn't be a problem. That cooler idles(idled) at like 35C. The stock PSU, however, wouldn't be able to handle a GPU and a P4 at that speed.
I hope this helps you in your decision. :D

You might want to rethink that system, it seems dated.

You're right. If you want a better gpu, I recommend you look in my signature. I would highly recommend the Sapphire variant. It is passively cooled so it will work perfectly in a Shuttle XPC.

I have a Shuttle ST61G4 in the closet at my parents house. Still works, and it's rocking a 3.2GHz Northwood P4 (with HT!). Only qualm I have is that the onboard graphics on it might grow outdated - you know, what if Microsoft makes a new OS, oh, let's call it "Vista", and adds fancy visuals that this card can't handle?

OK, please let's not have a plague of decade-old-thread necros as a result of the "Nostalgia Lane" thread. You've had your fun... one is enough!

I'd wait a few months for the Pentium M, it's meant to have much better perf/W.
