SN41G2 Power Supply & Graphic Cards

Sun Nov 23, 2003 5:01 pm

Hey y'all, I need help.

I've been wanting to play some of the newer games on my computer, but then the onboard GeForce4MX is not satisfying my eye-candy needs ever since I started playing more than just SimCity 3000. *grin*

I'm looking at the GeForce5700Ultra by Gainward, however, it requires at least 250W PS, and as y'all might know, the SN41G2's PS is only 200W. So would the thing work? I've noticed that y'all have used Radeon 9800s, those cards draw more power than the 5700?

Hmm... does anyone encountered any problems with a third party board in terms of power supply problems before?

My guess is that it'd be OK - there are plenty of people running 3200s + 9800s in Shuttle cases.

Yes. Don't forget that those recommendations are geared towards desktop computers, which have motherboards that draw significantly more power and more drives. In addition, I believe the SFF's have more of their power distribution on the +5 and +12 lines, 'cause thats where it's needed.

Silent X! :D

A new 250W power supply has been shown in Shuttle's latest catalogue.

It will satisfy even the most demanding cards

I've got the new card :)

Mon Dec 01, 2003 7:30 am

Ok, I finally got a new card to repace that onboard GeForce4MX, which was good to play Sim City 3000 and The Sims for a while, but now, it's time to move on. ;)

And the new card is.... Drum Roll.... nVidia GeForce FX 5700 (non-Ultra) by Leadtek. I decided to play safe and get this lower-powered card, but the performance is pretty good so far. At last, Flight Simulator 2004 looks as Real as it Gets.

Poor graphics support for new Shuttle

Tue Dec 09, 2003 4:41 pm

Hi guys,

Just to warn you all. I just bought a new Hercules 9800SE card for my Shuttle SN85G4 (latest Athlon 64 version) and the unit WILL NOT power up with this and several other power-hungry cards. See other forums, you will find lots of people are having problems finding a suitable card.

The problem is that the 5V rail gets hit big time by these high-end cards and the 250W power supply just cannot cope at start-up. To get round it temporarily, I disconnect the MOLEX to the card, then power-up and immediately (1 second later) reconnect the MOLEX to the card. That way it all works fine but I can't keep doing that !!!!

Any ideas before I send this card back for a refund ??

Also, if anybody has a SN85G4 Shuttle and knows which graphic cards DEFINITELY work with this system, I would be grateful if you could share it with me.

Thanks

Marc
