The system in my signature (Adaptec SCSI controller, despite what everyone says) was about $2200 when purchased...$1600 now. If you adjust the sound/video to your taste and add another SCSI or larger IDE HDD for storage, and faster MP processors, you'll be within budget and have as close to top-of-the-line as you'll need before Hammer and the potential code bloat arising therefrom in 3-4 years (It'll be rock-solid stable, too). I could not be happier with this system.

http://www.dansdata.com/altindex.html - it won't tell you how to build (or choose) a high-end computer per se, but the same issues arising from inexperience are exactly the same for a $500 computer as for a $3000 one (jumpers, setting slave/master drives, care in cable routing, quality power supply, adequate fans, etc.)
