Does anybody know a good site or sites that list components for a top notch system. I am building a new rig for a rich friend and I am looking for some quality advice for a good system. thank you

Check out this article in Linux journal. My box is somwhat similar with some changes geared towards saving some loot and compatability with FreeBSD.

I was thinking more Window rather than Linux but I guess it doesn'tmatter with the hardware.

A "top-of-the-line system" is pretty vague, what kind of a budget are you looking at???

I am thinking 3k without the Monitor. But that is adjustable.

The system in my signature (Adaptec SCSI controller, despite what everyone says) was about $2200 when purchased...$1600 now. If you adjust the sound/video to your taste and add another SCSI or larger IDE HDD for storage, and faster MP processors, you'll be within budget and have as close to top-of-the-line as you'll need before Hammer and the potential code bloat arising therefrom in 3-4 years (It'll be rock-solid stable, too). I could not be happier with this system.

Dan is a lot of fun to read: 3 computer-building articles near the top of http://www.dansdata.com/altindex.html - it won't tell you how to build (or choose) a high-end computer per se, but the same issues arising from inexperience are exactly the same for a $500 computer as for a $3000 one (jumpers, setting slave/master drives, care in cable routing, quality power supply, adequate fans, etc.)

Just take NRobinsons system, add a Geforce 3 Ti500 or a top of the line Geforce 4, or possibly a All in Wonder Radeon 8500.

The system you get is hideously good.

And about 3-5 times faster than the system I´m about to get within days/weeks.

But I´m gonna use something close to the equvivalent of 550-700$, and i expect that system to last me for a minimum of 3 years with minor upgrades.

Hey, does your rich friend want a tax write-off? If he gives me $3,000 for a computer that I will use for my, uh, *ahem* non-profit charity that I run, HTPG (Help the Poor Gamer) I will let him know what components I choose and how well they might work in a similarly configured box that he would use...

I would have to agree with two posts above. Linux Journal has specs for one of the most potentially ass-kicking systems on their site.

NRobinson's system also looks really good. Dual processors kick ass for serious multi-tasking and a gig of DDR RAM will do anyone well. I would go with the MSI K7D (AMD 762 MPX chipset). It has onboard LAN.

Don't forget to add a Pioneer 16x DVD slot drive. Getting a plain old CD-ROM drive nowadays would be close to silly. Those drives are for value-end, bargain basement, this-computer-is-for-a-little-girl Gateway and Dell computers.

And if your friend has a lot of cash to put toward this computer, don't skimp on the monitor--that's his interface to his computer and monitors are just one of those things that don't go obsolete, even after a couple of years.

My recommendation for speakers is the Logitech Z560 (4.1). I haven't heard a single bad thing about them and even though your friend may have lots o' cash at his disposal, these speakers are a far better deal than the Klipsch Promedias
