McAfee Virus Scan 8.0 update problem

Postposted on Thu Dec 18, 2003 8:59 pm

Despite my most sincere efforts, I have been unable to schedule updates. This disconcerts me, as I want it to update daily. It is set to "Automatically download and install updates", but it doesn't have the option to schedule when to CHECK for the updates. This seems like an oversight on McAfee's part. Anybody know if I'm missing something?

Yes, you're missing the fact that McAfee is a giant, steaming pile of donkey excrement and should be flushed as such.

Edit: I realize that's not what you're looking for with this post, but I have had some really miserable experiences with McAfee and every time I see the name my lower lip quivers with rage.

I also had the same experience, here is what I have to do to run the updates. I usually do this once a week.

Do you run ZoneAlarm or other firewall that might block ActiveX programs to load? Shut it down while the update is running. You can keep the Windows XP firewall if you want.

Do you have a pop-up blocker, like the Google Toolbar? Disable it for the Mcafee web site or domain.

Finally, and this is something that I hate to do, make sure that you access the
update site using IE. Non-IE browsers sometimes have problems with ActiveX.

After I do this two things my updates run perfectly. And It is my opinion that McAfee Virusscan is a superior product compared to Norton. Mostly on the non-intrusive part, and not needing as much system memory (although ~40MB is a little steep anyways when you have all the services running), but I have 634 MB of room, I can live with that. There might be a better AV, but I can't complain with a Corporate license, can I?

Thanks for the insight, but I love it :)

Anyways, getting it to update on it's own isn't the problem, but I want to schedule the updates. I think 7.0 could do it? humm dee dummm...sigh
