Ok, I am Running Raid 0 With Four 40 Gig Ibm Hard Drives On A Promise FastTrak 100 Controler Card. Now, I Am Taking A Mandrake 8.1 Class At St Cloud Tech, In MN And We Need To Install Linux On Our Home Computers. However, I Can Not Get Linux To Install, Because I Can Not Find A Driver For Linux For The Promise FastTrak 100 Card.
I Have Windows 98 As The Pri Dos Partion And Then Have Logical Drives On The Ext Partition. Includeing Windows Xp, So Right Now I Am Dual Booting Xp And Windows 98. So I Wish To Tripple Boot.

I Do Have An Extra 60 Gig Hard Drive. If I Can Use That To Install Linux By Just Running It Off The MotherBoard I Will, But I Need Linux To See The Partitions On The Promise Contoler So I Can Tripple Boot.

If Anyone Has Any Idea Where To Get A Driver Please Post, Or If Anyone Has Any Ideas About Useing Other Drivers Please Tell Me, If Anyone Knows How I Can Setup Linux To See The Partitions On My Promise Controler Without Installing A Promise Driver Please Tell me, Which ever, I Please Need Help. Please Reply.

Remarkably, the drivers are on the promise web site.

I have been to the promise site 99 times, to my knowledge there are no mandrake 8.1 drivers.

ftp://ftp.promise.com/Controllers/IDE/F ... LinuxBETA/

the faq says nothing about mandrake yet, neither does manrakes site say anything about support

In general, linux drivers are linux drivers. The distro isn't what matters, its the kernel version. Don't know right off hand what Mandrake installer uses, but it is fairly recent because it had no problems with my onboard Highpoint controller.

lundrog - You are SOL at the moment. Wait for Mandrake 8.2 (which just might have the newer open source ataraid driver) or get ready for some serious masochism. Also popular is installing on a spare single disk, compiling an ataraid-ready kernel, then moving over.

It is far from an easy task. I'd advise getting a real RAID controller or waiting.

Lundrog:
Any of the 3Ware Escallade series IDE-RAID controllers will work under Mandrake 8.1, out of the box. I'd recommend the 7410 for your needs. As to backing up to the 100Gig HDD, I suggest the IBM 120GXP 100Gig, but that's just me. Many people look down their noses at IBM drives at the moment, so perhaps Western Digital might be better for you.

I am quite fond of my WD 400BBs at the moment. I have four and abuse them regularly. I also have a 205BA that is roughly three years old, also eligable for regular beatings.

Actually, after re-reading your last post, you may not need a 3ware at all. Wouldn't hurt, but if you don't mind putting the single IDE drive in... Install Mandrake on the single drive, download latest kernel, compile; including ataraid support, make the device entries, roll.

The ata-raid list can be helpful as well.
